There will never be another like him I’ll be surprised if I see it in my lifetime because I was listening to Van Halen the day they were leased the very first album because word got out long before they released that album that there was a band named Van Halen they were known before the album even dropped

"Poundcake" refers to a real woman, not fake, high maintenance women. Sammy talked about it when the song came out. There was some MTV special where he talked about it.

Funny story. Way back when I just got that album and was writing lists to organize the music on my ipod, I was using the initials for the albums so save me having to write so much. I started writing the initials for this one and then I was like OH. lol Didn't realize it about the title until then.

Song is about his preference for a "real" girl. Home grown and down home. Poundcake is an analogy for a woman that is real and not trying to be something she's not. It's not about sex. Note the lyric "...tried a little bit of everything. But, it's all sex without love. I found the real thing is poundcake."

Fun Fact: Eddie Van Halen was originally a drummer when he was younger and his brother Alex, who is Van Halen's drummer was a guitar player. Then they switched, and Alex is pretty damn good drummer too.

I was lucky to see Van Halen twice it was with Sammy Hagar when they came to Hawaii. Both concerts Eddie had that big smile on his face while playing his guitar. I'm glad Sammy & Eddie patch thing's up before Eddie left us.

They lost the makita drill from the original recording, and had to settle for a lower rpm makita for the tour, making the song sound a little different live.

@Stoney Bonez Since practically _everyone_ had been copying EVH for 15 years before both songs were released (1991 for both), I doubt it. Plus, Paul idolized Ed. I guess anything is possible, but I don't recall Ed being upset with anyone copying his style any more than I recall Billy Gibbons being upset with Ed copying his sound.

I was lucky to see them on this summer outer amphitheater tour when my amazing godfather/stepfather took my best friend & me. During his solo, Eddie ralphed in a bucket, then immediately went to playing his guitar with his teeth like an angel. For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was/is a dope album. They did a live version of this song on the MTV video music awards (back when MTV still played music) and Arsenio did a great intro for them. They did a whole concert called Live without a Net that's on here. One of their best songs is "Aftershock," which is off the Balance album. Saammy Hagar was SUCH a bad ass front man for VH!! I saw him fronting for Van Halen in Sacramento a couple times in the 90s. I remember well them performing this song and it was utterly FANTASTIC!! Sammy's singing and stage presence were just fantastic! Combined with Eddie's incomparable guitar work, Alex's mad drum skills and Mikey on bass, it really was one of the best, most fun concert experiences I've ever had. Great days, man.

I was born in 72' I grew up basically with VH.(thanks to older bother and sisters) I still get goosebumps when I hear Eddie play. Many arguements are and always will be made as to who the "greatest guitarist" is. I have many favorites, but none of there music hits me like his does. RIP Eddie you will be missed.

Fun Fact. Eddie used that drill, a Makito in most live performances of poundcake. He liked the way the drill sounded when hearing it once so he tried using it on his guitar, thus the weirdest guitar pick ever was made.

I saw Van Halen when they were the opening act for Black Sabbath. That was my best concert ever. It was Black Sabbath's 10th anniversary tour. New rock and old school together. R.I.P Eddie.
