My husband left me in 2018 after 28 years. He won't pay for a divorce and I can't afford one. I work part-time to have an emergency fund. I never thought I would end up like this. The house is paid for but I send him high priority e-mails to make sure he pays the property taxes. I pray every day that nothing big breaks. Some days I just feel hopeless, as I'm having mobility issues and can't do things that I used to. 😢

I am so sorry to hear about what happened to you. Divorce is one of the leading indicators of poverty among women. I wonder if you could reach out to a a women's shelter that might have information on attorneys who will take your case and seek a court order for your husband to pay attorney fees as part of the divorce settlement. It is not uncommon for spouses in your situation to request and be granted such . It sounds like you also wohld likely receive spousal support.

My area's court allows for filing with a fee waiver if you can show you can't afford the filing fee. You can later request the court to have him pay any fees that waivers don't cover. You can look for paralegals and/or legal paper writing companies that can draw up the forms. You can also request mediation as an alternative to hiring a lawyer. Court appointed mediators often come on a sliding scale rate based on income.

Thank you for your common sense. Honestly I don’t know why they don’t teach basic living skills in schools. I’m 70 years old and ten years ago I lost EVERYTHING in a wild fire including my car. I had insurance but it only paid pennies on the dollar. I picked myself up, bought an old used car and moved to a place that was cheaper to live. I live in an affordable rental and furnished it top to bottom with second hand everything. My social security pays for all my living expenses and I have a savings account. I have no credit cards and no debt and I’m perfectly happy. It can be done people.

Hey Carol, you look beautiful decked out in your summer outfit. Thanks for the tips on retirement. These are great tips. I took early retirement after caring for my mother with Alzheimer's for ten years. I took it out of necessity. Taking care of her almost did me in. I live in a building for seniors and it is considered affordable housing. The company has buildings in 4 states one of which is California. I just checked their website and all the buildings in California the wait lists are closed. The other states have open waitlists. I know that where I live some people are struggling to make their rent as prices keep going up. My plan a for retirement did not work but my plan b was to live in a place like I am in now. You have to have a plan and a backup plan. I consider myself lucky to be where I am.😊

You are absolutely right about having a plan. You are fortunate to be where you are. Sadly waiting lists for many affordable housing locations in California are closed. In fact in San Diego there is a lengthy wait just to get on a Section 8 housing list and then after getting on the list the wait can be over a decade to get a voucher. And, oo there is a strong real estate market when you get your voucher you may be competing with 40 other people for a single unit!! If you would be willing can you please contact me about the company that owns the units in California you noted in your comment. I would like to learn more about them. I agree with a 100%. The problem is, people do not put much as a funds away, especially middle class people because they think they're going to live this lifestyle forever. They're not when you retire, you get half the money that you made when you are working a normal job, which means you'll get less money that's. Why I tell people when your kids leave home? That's the time you downsize. I've downsized for like 89 years now and I love it. I live a lot cheaper. Hopefully, I may get my land soon, if not, that's fine, I'll do fan life leave. Alternatively, small little room or little tiny home. I'll be fine. What's? Up to you to budget guys, you have to budget them and live under your means.

It's funny to say that this is why I downsized 5 years ago, I'm i'm in my mid-forties. I'm making plans right now for when I get older because I know when I get older. I want to pay rent or a mortgage so I build my camper trailer and my camper Van ready for that day. Knowing that day will come and hopefully by then, I'll buy a piece of land but it's not a guarantee so I prep and stuck up on food always. So I've at least 3 months worth of food at all times I live within my means or even under my means even now, so I live very comfortable right now and that may happen to help me. When I retire I can live accountable, I would have to go and back to work. A lot of people in the 70s have to go back to work but for McDonald's or what part-time I don't when I take off. I don't plan to walk again. I left side tools too. So I'm working hard now to ensure that don't happen.

5:00 you hit the nail right on the head, will actually need to teach kids how to take care of themselves financially, because we currently have the most expensive generation right now. And now we're also raising the (socially) dumbest generation yet. And to add on top of that, the amount of therapy they're going to need to go through in order to learn how to take care of themselves and their mental health, literally being raised by technology, a great majority of these kids being abandoned or left to technology from an absent parent. Maybe the parents just busy with work, but technology made it too easy. We're raising little addicts. On my channel I'm adding this video into the playlist, I'm just not sure where yet. I do enjoy these videos and hope you make more, Carol! Thank you for the time and energy you spend sharing them with us. They're informative and help to predict pitfalls that we might fall in to in the future. Folks need to remember, though, that advice is just that, advice, and not a guaranteed formula to success for everyone. Even if folks follow everything said to the letter, it might not produce the same results. Personally, I find going to the grocery store with a set budget instead of a list encourages me to get what I need for the family to last as long as needed first. Then, if there's anything left in the budget, I can consider upgrading items I've already selected or adding snacks and luxury foods. If what I've gathered busts the budget before the required number of meals I can downgrade or start trading items out for ramen or macaroni and cheese until it works.

Good advice for people in every age group. I've been debt free on and off through my life but finally kicked it after divorce from a man who couldn't control his spending. I've had no debt for 7 years. I have an emergency fund, unfortunately needed to tap into it this past year. So many people can't put money aside due to living paycheck to paycheck. Or when they get debt free something comes along to kick them back down like car maintenance of medical expenses. This is why people have to keep working. And you're correct. They need to reevaluate where and how they live and make changes to get into a better financial situation.

I was barely making rent while going through a divorce living in a one-bedroom low-income apartment. I could not believe they kept raising my rent $50 every year. I had no choice but to look for an alternative to maintain my independence. This is why I chose van life. I am proud to say if I had not made this choice I would not be able to say I am debt free with an eviable credit rating living stress free even as the price of groceries have nearly doubled in the past five years and continue to rise. Have we seen the worst of this bad economy? Unfortunately, I do not think so. However, I feel I am better prepared to face the even harder times that may be coming. With that said, the lack of respect, understanding, and sometimes outright hostile restmentment I have encountered by those who justify valuing everyone by what they have or dont have continues to disgust me. I felt the need to trade a traditional lifestyle for an unconventional one for the peace of mind I have now. I have no regrets.

I absolutely agree that there is so much judgment and sometime plain hostility against folks living in vans, rvs, etc. Many have made this choice out of necessity and it has literally saved them from being tossed onto the streets. As you noted many now, often for the first time, are debt free and even able to put a little savings aside , which is ironically better than many who are sitting in judgment of them. Go figure I would love to interview you to share that side of van life you noted in your comment. If you are interested you can reach me at Gloriouslifeonwheels@gmail.com

Don't try to maintain the same lifestyle. You had doing New York downsiyes. This will help you close to your vision of retirement and if you have a good job, find a texture of this job pays good retirement pension which is hard cause most jobs today Don't give pensions Anymore.

A house, an apartment, an RV or van. I have tried every one and all have their good and bad points. Currently living in Florida in my home that is paid off, but the maintenance, insurance and taxes will keep me from ever being able to fully 'retire'. I have a friend that retired with over 4k net a month. PLENTY of cash to live on. At one time she had a paid off house as well. She sold the house, chased her 'love' all over the East coast, spent all her cash and now rents and thinks she needs a full time job in order to 'survive'. She had lots of debt as well and refused to budget.. she could not control her spending addiction. I cut ties with her because of her toxic habits.

Well, living to your vehicle is no different than having a house sticks and bricks both of them, have one thing in common maintenance. You have to maintain both of them. Whether you have a house or a, you living a Van, the only thing you may not have to maintain so much is with your renting, which I always recommend if you're retired and you're older to rent if possible, you're better off renting, if you don't have a if you have a 6 and bricks rent rather than own because you have to maintain the house it's going to be expensive but if you rent you. Don't have to maintain anything because you don't own it. The landlord has to take care of it so you're good there.

I will have to disagree with you on renting v's ownig. I own my home and yes it's paid off it cost me a little under $500.00 this includes gas, electric, insurance, and property taxes a month to live here in upper lower Michigan . And if I was paying rent even at the low end it would be around a $1,000.00 a month. That is a $500.00 difference and I do not pay $500.00 a month in maintenance. When you pay rent you are paying gas, electric, water, maintenance fee, property taxes, liability insurance as well as payrolls for employees and or contractors to do repairs, and let's not forget the owner of the rental company/owners they are in to make $$$$

@DebbieM1140 Actually you make a point that I forgot to mention if you're I was only talking about like if you had a mortgage out of house you clearly paid off your house and your bills are only $500 a month. That's good in your case. In that case, it's worth it, but you still have maintenance. If your bowler breaks down, someone costs you $67000. If you're rent and your boiler breaks down, your download has to fix it. That's you so it costs you nothing there's problems and comes. Loudly, Gloria says so I agree with you. It depends on that person's circumstances in your case, you pin up your house. So that's great, so it's worth it to keep your house kind of we've got still paying more kids on the house. All those things with 500 plus your mortgage. Looking at probably $3000 a month, so rent is better in that way, but like you said you paid off your house, so in your case, you're in better shape than if you were renting so you're coming, you are right, I agree with you on that point, if you hasn't paid off then it looks out cheaper than paying rent. Because you rent your pain forever and ever and ever and you don't. Own it ever and this goes up. Load up so that point, yes.

I "retired" at 55 and was in that situation for 10 years til I qualified at 65 for Medicare. It was tough. I was able to take out a plan eventually that had a $5,000 deductible. So basically I was responsible first 5k. I would try to do all my physicals, checkups etc. around the middle part of one calendar year so I could go the entire next year with no appointments and no payments. It was quite a challenge. My other option was to pay $1,300 per.month for only me as I wanted a PPO not an HMO like Kaiser. It was a real challenge. But thongs are better now in California I believe woth Obama care from what I hear. Also, California does have, from what I hear, a decent medi-Cal program for low income folks.

This is why. I tell people you must live within. Your means and under your means. But with the credit card thing, if you're in your 80s, I will not lower it by a payment of the credit cards. I'd extend them and use them all out because when you die. They can't collect on it anyway. And they can't go after your siblings for it either. They lose money on that. That's why they're in short so I will not worry about paying off credit cards in your 80s. If I have credit cards and I'm in my 80s. I'm not paying them off. I use them all up to the max. Take advantage of them because what are you gonna do come after me when I'm dead. I don't think so. And I can't go after my siblings for the money either. So I won't worry about credit cards when you're in your 80s.

I would not deliberately my credit cards up with intention of paying them because I was elderly.. The reason being is that really hurts everyone as credit card companies aren't going to just sit back ajd let losses like that pile up without taking action. They will turn around and get their money back by raising interest on everyone thereby harming people who use their cards in an emergrncy and are not in their 80s and now stuck with high interest.
