The Vancouver Race Riot of 1907 happened during the visit of US Labor Leader AE Fowler. He led the Seattle Labor Day parade and two days later went to Bellingham where he incited white workers to expel 250 Sikhs who were working in the mill.
Three days later they went to Vancouver where Mayor Bethune and his Electoral Union Council slate had voted to host an anti Chinese rally at City Hall. His rousing speech precipitated the race riot.
The Vancouver Race Riot and its aftermath destabilized the British Raj in India and initiated Canada's War on Drugs. For decades after, politicians would not dare to oppose racist policies.
British Columbia had started as highly multicultural under the government of the Hudson Bay Company. Its Governor James Douglas was part black and married to an aboriginal woman. They spoke French at home. Judge Begbie had thrown out racist legislation. It was only after he died in 1894 that the 1895 Chinese Head Tax was implemented.
