When the Vancouver School Board voted to rename the Lord Roberts Elementary School on Jan. 30, 2023, because Frederick Roberts had "run concentration camps and targeted indigenous people", Global Civic believed there was a lack of understanding of the issue.
This has not been the first time the Vancouver School Board had made errors in their renaming of Vancouver schools, which have been unpopular with many citizens, but have proceeded with limited public involvement.
Sam Sullivan, former Mayor of Vancouver and Honorary Major in the BC Regiment, explains that this school was named to mark the first time that Vancouver soldiers were ever called upon by Canada to place their lives on the line for their country. Our first Vancouver veterans fought and died under Lord Roberts in the Boer War in the year 1900.
Despite the concerns of some School Board Trustees that so much money and staff resources are being devoted to renaming schools rather than educating students, the renaming process continues. Vancouver schools have many serious problems that need attention, like bullies who are traumatizing students and teachers without being disciplined or removed from the school. Or the alarming rise in anxiety and depression among young students, especially girls. Should Trustees prioritize the well-being of students, especially when some psychologists say that these things for an unstable student could make things worse.
Several other governments in the province have engaged in similar processes, upsetting communities, without adequate regard for the feelings of the residents and understanding of the history of the province.
Global Civic wants to stimulate dialogue and policy development and has started this initiative to recommend a more inclusive and better informed process that considers all communities involved in future renaming of places and removal of memorials in the province.
At Global Civic we are committed to encouraging all governments in British Columbia to demonstrate respect and responsibility by following best practices in all future renamings. We encourage all residents who respect their province and the people who built it to join together and stand up for British Columbia and work for a better process for renaming and removing memorials.
