Santa Monica, May 21, 2024 - The City of Santa Monica has commenced restoration the Jones Memorial Seat at Palisades Park. A fence was erected around the monument yesterday, only to be dismantled this morning, allegedly by homeless individuals. City employees are currently reinstalling the fence to secure the site.
Jones Memorial Seat: A Landmark of Historical Significance
The Jones Memorial Seat, a landmark in Palisades Park, honors Senator John P. Jones, the founder of Santa Monica. Designed by Robert Farquhar, Jones' son-in-law, the seat faces west toward the Pacific Ocean. An inscription on the memorial commemorates Jones' habit of watching the sunset from this spot, where he once resided across the street, where the Miramar Hotel now stands.
The seat, set on a brick platform with stone steps, is divided by a tall stone memorial inscribed: “In the evening of his life, John P. Jones used to come each day to watch the sun set over the ocean.” The back of the memorial is dedicated to Jones' contributions to the city and the nation.
Inscription
In honor of John P. Jones, founder of Santa Monica and for thirty years a Senator of the United States, pioneer of the West, statesman, philosopher, friend.
On the spot he loved so well, this memorial has been erected in recognition of his services to the City of Santa Monica and to the nation.
In the evening of his life, John P. Jones used to come each day to sit in this spot and watch the sun set over the ocean.
