This song was hot on TRL back in the day. It’s actually quite painful for me to listen to because of the nostalgia. But I always felt the same way you did about the song’s structure like… it’s just meandering with no chorus? But I can also appreciate it as sort of a whimsical poem that came to life. I’m pretty sure that’s the vibe Vanessa was going for.

I think I like this song better than her well-known megahit "A Thousand Miles". She definitely belonged to a subgenre of young female singer-songwriters that broke out in the early 2000s, paving the way for Taylor Swift. And yes, that is Vanessa on the piano.

Yup, E, that was Vanessa playing the piano. Still love this song (poignant quality about all its components). You’re right, E. Before Taylor Swift, there was Vanessa Carlton, Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne in the early 00’s singing about white girl angst. And I was here for it! 😁 And 😂 “land of the couples” 👏🏾

I feel you TS could still cover this. This piano pop girl stood out from the rest, I think a little too much for the time.🔥
