On this day in 1969 {February 2nd} Vanilla Fudge performed "Shotgun" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'... One month later on March 8th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #68 and spent 5 weeks on the Top 100... The year before in 1968 the group had their biggest hit; a covered version the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hanging On", it reached #6 on the Top 100... R.I.P. Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974}...

Re: Drummer 17562 (below) saying Carmine Appice arranged the Atco recording contract for Led Zeppelin. Based on what I've read over the years, that is incorrect. Jimmy Page apparently phoned Atlantic Records chief Jerry Wexler to pitch his band on the basis that so many of his fave musicians were on Atlantic (then primarily a premium soul and jazz label). Dusty Springfield was on Atlantic at the time (doing her classic 'Dusty In Memphis' and its hit, 'Son of a Preacher' man. Apparently she was playing pool/billiards with Wexler at the time of the call. Though Ertegun seemingly did not know who Page was (understandable at the time), Dusty did, as both Page and John Paul Jones were top London session players and Jones was on her 'Dusty... Definitely' album. Supposedly she gave the thumbs up to Wexler, and on her approval he proceeded to entertain the idea of signing Zeppelin. What Carmine did do is arrange for a Ludwig drum endorsement for Zep's John Bonham. Indeed, when Zep arrived for their first American tour (which they were doing because Jeff Beck declined it, and at the time he and Zep shared the same manager, Peter Grant), Bonham was deflated when he saw his little Ludwig kit next to Carmine's, which had two massive 26" bass drums (versus Bonham's one 22") and oversize toms. So Carmine called Bill Ludwig Jr. and arranged an identical kit for Bonham (maple w/two bass drums). John Paul Jones apparently found the second bass drum was crowding his bass space and requested it be eliminated, which it was, resulting in the classic Bonham setup...which was a Carmine kit with just the one bass drum.

I knew Carmine influenced Bonham re the Ludwig maple large drum set up but this is the first time I read why Bonham's set only had the 1 bass (although I've seen pics of him playing the double bass but with a 14 inch vs 15 inch rack tom like Carmine used on this video) . In the 70's , I was at a show on Randals Island N.Y. where the Fudge were headliners after Jeff Beck Group when Rod and Ron were in the band and Ten years After . After J.B. finished their set,out came Jimmy page, Plant, Bonham (had to be carried out and placed behind the giant drums ) and Glenn Cornick from Tull along with members of jeff becks band and they jammed 3 or 4 tunes B-4 the Fudge came out. I was in heaven that night !

@Mark Gibson so did Appice. AND he had a 2nd kick. it's not how he did the stuff Bonham stole. the 2nd kick was mostly for appearances, you know, the way Bonham's was while he had it. there's no debate here, it's established, historical musical knowledge where Bonham copped most of his 'rock licks'. it's not that he didn't become a master of them, because he certainly did. but he didn't invent any of it (and he got the 'drum solo with your hands' thing from Joe Morello).

But I still like VF’s version of Keep Me Hanging On.

Folks for their first US Tour LedZep was the back-up band for the Vanilla Fudge! Both were on Atlantic at the time and the Fudge made the decision to hire them on. Later, Appice arranged with Ludwig; his sponsor, to get Bonzo a set similar to his massive 26 inch bass drums. If you like this, check out Cactus!!! No one comes close to Carmine, just as no one can touch a Bogart bass line... ouch- too hot, red hot! Stein's slamming of the Hammond to get a strange reverb effect is trademark.

Mark Stein looks so funny, but I guess it's because he's high or something. The interesting thing about this band is that they often are considered as one of the first metal bands, when they began psychedelic / soul, finding themselves on Atlantic records and stuff. It's as if Black Sabbath started playing soul music... anyway, it was all about the blues.
