I think too that we get tired of always having to be 'on'. Having to problem solve the shower, water accessibility...yeah yeah...having to bring it up with the camp ground/hotel etc management is just almost a regular thing. So rarely is it as easy as go there, use facilities and leave without issue. I think it has a cumulative emotional effect, a wearying of our spirit. Yes, we continue to fight on (no choice really), but like you showed after your 'luxury' stay - an experience where disability is not 'problematized' becomes a pleasure. I hope a time does come when more time is devoted to the pleasure part for all of us.

Yeah, it ain't easy navigating our friendly, well intentioned able bodied friends world. I'm a t12 para wheelchair user. I bring my shower chair with me. It has the donut shaped seat. Hotel room with a tiny flimsy , dangerous, toilet? Shower chair over it! Bath tub with just a grab bar? No problem! Well intentioned but incorrectly designed shower like in this video? Shower chair to the rescue! In the boonies, all alone? Shower chair, jug of warmed water, jug of cool rinse water, aaahhh nothing like showering out in nature in only your birthday suit! It's kinda cool actually! Very free feeling! The chair is a little ungainly in the van but the independence it provides makes it worth shlepping around. Lisa, I'm with you on the psych stuff. Incessant, daily micro traumas can turn one into a grumpy wheelchair person for sure! Love how you roll with things and advocate slowly, calmly, intelligently. Pay attention ya'll. This is how you do it! Like everyone else I hope to meet you some day. Am literally selling the farm and will be van lifeing by next June so watch out for a blue/gray Ford Transit with New Hampshire plates! Know of any good surfin schools for us wheelers out in Cal? Gotta learn to do that! Can't be to much harder than skiing or kayaking right? Peace & love to everyone!

In watching your video I am reminded of the struggles encountered when I would visit my 70+ year old wheelchair bound aunt in the early 1970s when I would take her shopping for the day in a bigger city in the Midwest. I would have to park close to the curb so she could get in her chair on the sidewalk. Then when we got in a store the aisles were not even wide enough for her to roll her chair through. ADA has helped people with physical challenges but it is obvious from this video that we aren't there yet!

Happy 28 and 1/4 anniversary!! I am in awe of, and love, how you keep flipping the narrative of a frustrating situation into one of opportunity, growth, abundance, and beauty. You are a force ro be reckoned with. I hope you allow yourself to scream and cry sometimes too as that is a good release before you re-regulate and construct a positive story. We all want to put our best face forward so, if you do scream and cry like i would be inclined to do in a situation such as the ones you faced today, it's understandable that you might not want to film yourself doing so. It might be kind of funny and refreshing if you did, though. Not funny in the moment but definitely good for a chuckle when the storm has cleared. Maybe i need to vegin my own channel where i just let loose and have a laugh afterwards 🤭 I am so grateful to have found your channel through Bob. Thanks very much for this look at your travels. I always enjoy your videos, but this one was esp enjoyable. I'm glad you got a chance to see your experience from another perspective in editing. There's definitely good that comes from being a "glass half full" person, but it can also lead to putting up with a lot of systemic ableism, leaving it unchanged. You mentioned it had taken ~2.5 hrs out of your day and I think that's another thing that abled folks tend to actually blame disabled people for. Schools, workplaces...they think of disabled people as lazy or flaky when it's actually the compound effects of systemic ableism that would make someone late to school or work. You can only budget so much extra fudge time in! I'm glad you brought it up to the camp worker and really hope NV will improve that campground. In your camping & outdoors adventures, do you ever meet wheelchair users that do not have SCIs and might have different access needs within wheelchair accessible infrastructure? It'd be great to hear what you feel what you've learned from other disabled people (and vice versa).

I have a few friends with visions loss and I almost want to say accessibility for that is further behind than access for wheelchairs. And I have e a few friends that use a wheelchair but can walk or stand for short periods…am I ever envious! A curb or misplaced shower bench isn’t as much of a barrier. And then I have friends who use a power wheelchair that are envious that I can open doors etc on my own. I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is that everyone faces a challenge, some are just more visible than others.

❤❤Thank you, unfortunately I'm not that fit anymore, arthritis in my hands after more than 40 years in a wheelchair. It's great how you've managed to get around. Do you also have a video of how you transfer to bed? By the way, in Europe there are shower bags that you can fill with water and then take a shower, that would be an emergency solution. Incidentally, I used to shower in my wheelchair when I went to the spa, I always sprayed the ball bearings with oil beforehand, then cut off 4 plastic hats from the top around the ball bearings, it's practical like an umbrella, can be taken off after showering, made around the small wheels, plastic bag around the back seat, seat cushion in plastic bag (had one with a zipper fastener) with a towel over it and that's how I showered when there was no shower wheelchair in the spa. An emergency solution. You can put a bed sheet (not a fitted sheet) in the bus or in the bathroom and turn with the wheelchair so that the dirt doesn't stick to the wheelchair and your bus isn't so dirty.

I have a space pod camper which I go camping with my two dogs they say it is wheelchair friendly the toilet is in one block that you can use in the shower. It is in another block 300 m away. I don’t understand why they didn’t make it accessible in one block of showers and toilets, but because they haven’t got a disability they don’t understand and none of the showers have a bench so someone like yourself can use it. I have to bring my own shower chair with me but this is the best spot that I can find where I can spend some time and some fun with my two girls/dogs

Up to the point of designing accessible sink bases and full bathroom installs. Where I work, the powers that be have never even heard of the Americans With Disabilities act. So maneuvering my wheelchair in the bathrooms is quite challenging. The company shows no willingness to abide by the federal law.

I plan to buy a van in 2 years when I turn 62 and I plan to work part time. My challenge is that I need to use a water flosser every day due to dental work that I have paid thousands of dollars for.

It's very possible with a large water tank on board. carry 32 gallons plus 3 gallons of drinking water in jugs. The beauty of Vanlife is you can customize your rig for your needs.

Great video; thanks for sharing and highlighting what a lot of able bodied people just wouldn’t think of or notice. I’ve had similar conversations about shower benches, usually along the lines of “my arms are pretty long, but do you think I’m going to be able to reach those controls?” Keep up the great work.

PT here. You think carrying a large piece of plastic to drape your w/c would help your shower situations? Kind of like covering furniture before you paint.
@Keepinitwheel306
4 ай бұрын
That’s actually a really good suggestion. I had tried that back when I first started swimming, but no matter what I did it would somehow still get the chair wet when I transferred off and my casters would still get wet and destroy the bearings. But it might still be a “not perfect” solution and save me a lot of headaches for instances like this.

@@Keepinitwheel306my husband sometimes has switched to a spare Roho to keep his custom cushion dry. Still have to cover the back upholstery and dry the chair after but it’s another imperfect approach in a pinch.

Re-watching your 👍videos👍 - A possible solution: if you had a waterproof tarp, or poncho (perhaps shower curtin?), you can cover your wheelchair (from the shower-bench) then sit on the tarped wheelchair to shower & still keep the chair 97% dry. May be worth a try if you find such conditions again(?) - is mojo a gas van? Or diesel?
