Gen4 NVMe does not need active cooling. It's in all current laptops, gaming or otherwise, and at best you'll see a thermal pad on the SSD's chips. Lower end models sometimes rely on the sticker that was placed onto the SSD... for cooling. From what I've heard so far, it's the controller chip that heats up on the Gen5 NVMe SSDs. This is a problem that we can expect to be resolved through revisions to this controller or it's firmware. You can rest assured that these manufacturer's DO want PCIe gen5 SSDs installed in laptops because they can charge a premium.

I suppose active is a bit misleading as passive will work fine. They just need something or you end up burning yourself or the chip if you just stab them in a usb adapter.

Nice catch. I heard there were Gen4 M.2s that got hot and required active cooling but upon investigation looks like that is only for quad enclosures that slot into PCIe. Thanks for the correction😅 Please subscribe, thanks for your support!

The key point is to have a heatsink on the faster M.2s or you risk thermal throttling and/or possible damage. These designs appear to transfer the heat okay, we didn't encounter any problems.
