Leave the hood up after you shut it down and there is no problem starting after the engine sits 20 or 30 minutes. Keep the hood closed and the heat builds up and the fuel boils. It's the new E10 gasoline that is the problem. The newer gasolines have a much lower boiling point. This never used to be a big problem years ago with the gasoline of the 1960's and 70's.

I have been fighting this on my 68 Plymouth. I get percolation. With ethanol fuel, it stalls a lot. I am running pure gas now. I also removed a damaged condenser to improve air flow to cool down engine temp. I did the Marvel Mystery Oil when I had a tank full of ethanol fuel and it helped.

The return line is the key. It let's the fuel and vapor circulate back to the tank where it can cool. It's why the Samurai doesn't have an issue.

Fresh cool air to the carb versus the round filter sucking hot engine bay air will reduce carb temperatures as well, and make more power to boot!

I also noted the FUEL PUMP itself is much hotter than the gas lines or the carburetor.

anytime fuel pump is hotter than gas lines means, she runs on vapor, extra lean mixture. will also makes engines run hotter, and so oil looses visquosity..making internal damages.. i know im fighting that same issue right now, and i know the engine builder of my brand new 357 c.i created that disaster and gave it to me, and now he doesnt want to acknowledge what shit he did, but i figured it out, having insane vapor locking issue, since june, also..i should say he gotten rid of my vapor return line to the tank wich now creates mores issue as my fuel tank is forced to eat back vapor by the feed line as at the same time she is not anymore feeding the carb, so engine stall under any load.. therefore the pump runs hotter.. also pressure build up in the tank, but the amount of liquid gas going out is insufficient to balance the total pressure of the tank so fuel also is boiling in my tank, you can hear it . plus, you got the overpressure in the face by removing gas cap. its literally doing pshhhhh like openning a beer well shaken. i know he screwed me, he pretend its all normal . i fugured it out, the same way you did. but now, new engine eat half of oil roughly 2 quart for about 1000 kilometers. no sightseeing of smoke.. so guess new cam shaft have suffer from heat of lean mixture, otherwise piston ring would smoke as hell, but its not. Now i have to store it for winter next week and will have 5 months of insane stress and bad nights thinking about this. so keep us update please , see ya

You do know a cowl induction hood is for forcing more air into your intake and not for letting heat out right? There's high air pressure at the base of the windshield so the air goes blasting in under a cowl Induction hood

I am working on this same problem with a 454 engine, it seems at this point that a wix filter 33040 with a vapor return line back to the tank at the top of the engine could help ( you don't / shouldn't have a fuel line only going to the carburetor ) also I have 2 new oem fuel pumps that have both failed a 10 minute 6 psi test ( going from 6 to 0 psi in 10 minutes ) I think the oem fuel pumps are bad, I'm not 100 sure yet, will try to update with more info soon

Today I suspect I vapour locked on my V12 E Type. It refused to start when left hot. I was using BP 95 unleaded fuel and had a full tank. The car has 4 Stromberg carburettors. I have electric pumps. Fuel was still being supplied to the carburettors. I think the problem is in the float bowls of the carburettors fill up with gas and stops fuel getting in.The test must be to get one of those plastic fuel bottle squirters and squirt into the air filter. I suspect that's the cure to fire it up and prove the point. I wonder?

I've tried 100% pure gasoline in all my carbureted cars and it does not seem to cure vapor locking or hard starting after a heat soak. I think it's all the other anti-pollution additives they mix in with it. If you look up the MSDS on gasoline you will find it's a mixture of about 10 different chemicals. But you are correct, whatever they are selling these days seems to have a lower boiling point than what they sold decades ago. My 68 Ford has vapor locked on me twice while going through a drive through if idling for more than a couple of minutes. All other cars are just a bitch to start in the summer after shutting off the engine and coming back 15 minutes later.

sediment in the mechanical fuel pump check valves limiting the ability of the pump to pull fuel from the tank and limiting the ability of the pump to maintain fuel pressure to the carb.. when the engine is shut off the fuel can drain all the way back to the tank.. creating a cold start , runs 10 seconds, stalls.. needs a minute of cranking to restart.. when the fuel pressure to the carb is reduced from 5 psi .. the fuel can boil at a lower temp. the check valves not holding tight allow the expanding vapor to push liquid fuel backwards thru the pump check valves and all the way to the tank. leaving the carb very low on fuel .. leaning out the air fuel ratio.. creating super hot pistons that have expanded with the rings till they barely move in the cylinder bores till the engine cools a while. the FIX.. a 1984 corvette fuel filter installed directly before the mechanical fuel pump inlet.. so the pump only gets filtered fuel. on vehicles with smaller lines you can use a 1990 ford ranger fuel filter. it can take 1/4 or 5/16 fuel hoses pushed on.. both are 10 micron rated so they catch all the sediment. once the filters are installed.. disconnect the fuel line at the carb. disconnect the ignition system so no sparks can be created.. extend the fuel hose into a clean clear 2 liter soda bottle. crank the engine for 15 seconds.. watching the pulses of fuel into the bottle.. each pulse should be full and equal to the others. do this 15 second cranking procedure 3 times.. this flushes fresh fuel thru the fuel pump at full pumping speed hopefully getting the sediment out of the check valves.. reconnect the fuel line to the carb. reconnect the ignition. start the engine.. with one hand bring up the engine speed to around 1800 RPM.. with the other hand. use a pair of long nose pliers to squeeze the new hose shut between the filter and the pump. .when the engine starts to stumble because of the low float level.. release the pliers.. this allows a full surge of fuel thru a wide open needle and seat. you may want to do this twice.. this gets creative on 4150/4160/4180 holleys. as trying to use up the rear float bowl fuel is not easy to do. you will now find you have no more vapor lock issues.. some strong magnets on the bottom of the fuel tank also help. as long as you never move them.
