The name of this Indian city is not on everyone's lips. But such shots must have been seen by many: burial fires burning over the river, gray-bearded elders painted with ash, crowds of pilgrims and terrible unsanitary conditions. The city is called Varanasi and is located on the western bank of the Ganges River, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, this is the center of northern India. The exact age of Varanasi is unknown, according to some sources it is 5000 years old. However, in the ancient Indian epic - Rigveda, Ramayana, MahabharAta - the city is already mentioned, moreover, as the most ancient on Earth, and its founder is the god Shiva himself. The spirit of India is concentrated here - bright, noisy, often frightening and incomprehensible, but always smiling. In importance for Hindus, Varanasi is similar to the Vatican for Catholics - it is a holy city, and just visiting it puts the believer on the path of enlightenment. Moreover, it is an ancient center of education and silk industry, music and arts.
It is difficult for a first-time tourist to come here to believe it, especially when he sees almost African poverty, mountains of garbage and cows wandering around the city. At such a moment, a foreigner, stunned by beeps and shouts, may want to urgently disappear from here - and never return. And yet it is worth waiting out the first shock and taking a closer look at this city. The reward will be an experience of a lifetime and a renewed view of the world: a trip to Varanasi is like a flight to another century. Or to another planet.
And so that the tourist does not go crazy on the planet of chaos, it is worth learning something about its structure in advance. What to do in Varanasi to make your trip a success? In this issue of the MMM blog, we have collected the most important recommendations.
Get lost and find yourself in the maze of streets
This quest is for everyone arriving in the city. You can get to Varanasi by train or plane from the Indian capital of Delhi. In both cases, the traveler will be attacked by hordes of private taxi drivers who will charge sky-high prices for delivering a tourist to the hotel. They are very intrusive, and difficult to fight back - but still possible. Then you can order an Uber or use a prepaid taxi service at a special counter - you pay for the fare to the cashier, receive a check with your car number and give it to the driver. It will turn out to be inexpensive and relatively reliable.
However, the taxi driver is unlikely to take you to the hotel door: the old part of the city, for which people come here, consists of a maze of tiny corridor streets, sometimes only one and a half meters wide. A car can't get here. After leaving the taxi, you have to dive right with your suitcases into this maze. Adventurous locals for a hundred or two rupees or a GPS navigator will help you find your way - they work quite well here. The road will run along dirty stone slabs among old buildings. On the way, you will surely meet cows chewing garbage, monkeys galloping on cornices, at least one funeral procession, a dozen drag dealers, barkers or simply crooks, several sages-Adhu, pass half a dozen temples and odorous eateries. Smells will rush into the nose - incense, manure, spicy food. All these tests - for the sake of a room overlooking the sacred river Ganges, from which these quarters break off. There is accommodation by the river, in the center of Varanasi, for every pocket, from very simple guesthouses costing 600 rupees per night to the most luxurious hotel in the city - “BridjrAma Peles Varanasi”, with rooms for 14 thousand or more (recall, one rupee today is approximately equal to one Russian ruble).
Take a walk along the embankments of the Ganges
After exploring the labyrinths of local streets, we will go for a walk to the embankments.

It is worth going there if the atmosphere of Manikarnika seems too intimidating. HarishchAndra has fewer bonfires, fewer people, and it's easier to take pictures.
