OK, so Sideways is a funny film and it had a jolly good laugh at Merlot’s expense while placing Pinot on a pedestal it may never climb down from. It dented Merlot’s reputation in the US, but it’s still an important variety in #Cabernet blends there. In any case, I imagine that Merlot has pretty healthy self-esteem, not least since it reigns supreme-in terms of plantings at least-in Bordeaux, where it often rubs shoulders with Cabernet Sauvignon and others on the left bank, and principally with Cabernet Franc on the right. Wherever these blends are mimicked around the globe (and they are mimicked a lot), Merlot is there. And pretty much wherever the climate is not too cold and not too hot, you’ll find Merlot hanging out in blends or playing a solo role.
It was co-fermented with Malbec for what will become the 2024 rendition of the #Yeringberg red, a five-way blend with Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc plus Petit Verdot. I took a trip to the Yarra Valley to ponder Merlot’s role in life.
