Thanks, Charles, for posting this very cool Rhino Christmas collection. I absolutely love that cover pic! The only two tracks with which I was previously familiar were Santo and Johnny's "Twistin' Bells" and "Merry Christmas Baby" by the Poets.

The Turtles recorded "Santa and the Sidewalk Surfer" when they were known as the Crossfires (1963-64): "THE CROSSFIRES were a band led by Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, a.k.a. Flo & Eddie. They changed their name to THE TURTLES in 1965. The song was also released on the TURTLES album “Happy together again - The Turtles` greatest hits” (Sire Records, 1974). On that double-LP the band states that the song was recorded Dec. 1963 and so must be “the first skateboard song ever waxed”, but that´s proven wrong, if you take a look at the original recording sheets printed in the booklet of the Crossfires` “Out of Control” CD. The sheets say recorded Nov 23, 1964." Posted by: docskaterock on December 22nd, 2013 on
According to discogs.com, Christmas Spirit (featured on the first track on this side) was a supergroup consisting of Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman of The Turtles; Gram Parsons and Gene Parsons of the Byrds; Linda Ronstadt; Modern Folk Quartet alumni Cyrus Faryar and Henry Diltz; and gospel singer Bessie Griffin.
