I also believe the Gull to be a Ring-Billed Gull on average the same size as the Crow. And as far as the individual on here who commented about "intervening" instead of filming it would NOT have been wise to do so. It's human nature to want to help and get involved yet we murder everyday for the sheer joy and this bird is doing it to survive. BIG DIFFERENCE that is the cycle of life folks please stop and think about that next time you may see yourselves witnessing a similar situation between two animals...(g)

This looks to be a Hooded Crow that decided to take on a VERY large bird as it's meal. This battle could have gone either way but I do know from experience how aggressive Hooded Crows are. They are about the same size as the American Crows we have here in the US but are more predatory by nature. I've been in the avian field now for 30yrs having both wild and exotic pet species experience. And have had the privilege of working "hands on" with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey and Budgies to Macaws. So I know what both of these birds are capable of there not just pure scavengers folks they are predators by every definition.

+Tony L...I suggest you Wikipedia this gulls region then. As you will find that it states quite clearly this gull being a regular wanderer to western Europe. Also in Ireland and Great Britain it is no longer classed as a "rarity" with several birds regularly wintering in these countries. Here is the link and it's direct claim. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring-billed_gull

+Tony L Well...I'm sticking with what my library of over 100 field guides have told and taught me over my 30yrs in this field as well. I've worked "hands on" with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey and Budgies to Macaws. I am the head director of my local natural history museums avian dept and exhibits. I have also worked with my local Audubon Society Chapter and have been asked to lecture around my region by them on numerous occasions. I also share my life with 6 "fids" as we parrot enthusiasts like to call them. But enough about my credentials i'm sticking with it being a Ring-Billed Gull. These Hooded Crows are FAR FAR more aggressive then the American Crows that frequent our backyards. They are more "Raven like" in there demeanor and over all predatory nature. Same size as our Crows although far more aggressive. Also, if your interested in Corvid behavior as i find them to be one of my favorite classes of birds. You might be interested in a video on here titled; Crow vs Gopher i was amazed at the footage when i first saw it. However, i'm forewarning you now that it is graphic in nature the Crow literally rips the heart out of the Gophers chest cavity. And also i suggest you watch it with the volume MUTED because the up-loader of the video decided to throw in some rather stupid and cheesy sound effects. Otherwise, it's an awesome example of the sheer beak power these birds truly have and not needing talons that Birds of Prey possess to kill there prey. What i've always found funny is the Cornell Ornithology Department which put out an online field guide stated in there description of American Crows. That there beaks were not powerful enough to pierce through skin thus not allowing them to kill in the same fashion Birds of Prey do. I sent them this video footage of the Crow vs Gopher and to say there were amazed would be a gross understatement. Which is why i've always told folks don't go by everything you read in a field guide or other birding book. These animals will shock you with new behavior at every turn i know my parrots do that everyday with me. Happy birding and keep your eyes to the sky my friend.

+Tony L No need to "bow down" to anyone for anything...!!! I respect everyone's opinion in this field including yours...!!! However, there are times I have had to explain my extensive background to folks. Who seem to question me on a particular area in the field that I have spent many years in studying. By did you watch that Crow vs Gopher video...? Personally, I found that quite fascinating to say the least probably why Corvids are on the top of my list in the bird kingdom.

+tomtalker2000 Hooded crows are aggressive indeed. I was in Norway a few days ago and I saw a hooded crow chase 3-4 seagulls away from a trash container. And one of the gulls were even a lesser blacked backed gull. If you go through KZitem you will also notice that hooded crows are less social than the carrion crows. I've also noticed that it seems like hooded crows are less scared of bigger foes.

Jalip07 Indeed so true...!!! Hooded Crows are quite aggressive compared to other "Corvids" in there family. In my field observations i've noticed they act far more "Raven like" then other Crows in there family. However, i live in the US so we only have American, Fish, & Northwestern Crow's here. With American's being obviously the largest and most powerful of the 3. I have seen them take down baby squirrels with no problems at all believe it or not. However, it does seem as if Hooded Crows are more predatory by nature as not as omnivorous at there American counterparts. I've also noticed that Hooded Crows seem to favor attacking and killing Rock Pigeons and can do that with ease. Most likely because those birds are extremely approachable and aren't super fast upon take-off because of there weight. Once in the air however they are BY FAR much faster then any Crow in flight. Which would explain why there able to evade predation in flight from raptors quite easily.
