In the session Lakshmi Vishwanatan speaks about the importance of the varnam of the Bharatanatyam repertoire, then and now. Her experiences of studying the varnams with the masterful Nattuvanar. An excerpt of the varnam ‘Nee Saati Dora’ -a composition of Tanjavur Quartet Ponnayya, in Ragam Bhairavi is performed. The varnam extols the virtues of the great Maratta king, His Highness Rajasri Maharajah Serfoji (September, 24 1777 - March, 8 1832). The king patronised royal courtesans, musicians and dance-masters at the darbar of the Tanjavur palace.
