I tend to agree with your point although I think it's better if all 5 axles were powered instead of just the 2 front and 2 rear axles...Perhaps if the middle axle was powered, the truck would have had a much better chance of unsticking itself from the sand...Also does Mercedes offer diff locks on this truck line?

Ben ik inderdaad met je eens, al rijdt ik zelf op een 10x4, toch denk ik zelf (ook omdat hij voor de helft geladen was) dat minder luchtdruk en de middelste as gelift en een vaartje wel geholpen zou hebben nou werkt de 3e as alleen maar tegen.

If that truck had a system for lowering and raising the air pressure on the tires it would be quite unstoppable. Seen it on 6x4 concrete mixers in work sites, works well.

Als je de wielen van de middenste as eraf gelaten had, had hij ook vol beladen, met een klein aanloopje dit heuveltje genomen. Het is puur dat in deze positie, die ene niet-aangedreven as alle gewicht draagt waardoor de andere wielen slippen. ..En uiteraard hebben trucks met conventionele asophanging te weinig veerweg om zoveel oneffenheid op te nemen: Met een Tatra met 40cm veerweg onafhankelijk geveerd, had je dit niet eens gemerkt...

Undriven axle supports too much weight of the truck so even four driven axles can't get enough traction. Dig small holes in front of undriven wheels so the whole truck go a little bit "downhill" and driven axles get some more weight and traction. Am I right?

I from Europe and Us trucks are alse great quaility. Mercedes is also very very good quality. Often they got syuck because the driver made a mistake. Getting stuck is not a problem, give a pull with the dozer or loader and you are on teh road again.

Because the centre axle is undriven, so it's gotten stuck on a hill where most of the weight is on the undriven axle.

iets minder luchtdruk in de banden zou misschien helpen,maar zandrijden is niet zo eenvoudig,ik heb het als 13j manneke geleerd op een Berliet GLM10 6X4 in Maasmechelen in de jaren'60 maar ben dikwijls vastgereden

yes if you live anywhere else than NL , 1/3 of NL is under sea level so it is always mud and soft and sand , those trucks from NL have something never seen on any other trucks

and yes another problem there is no space for middle axle to be driven , you a lot need longer wheelbase to fit drive axle because above that axle is transfer gear so you would need about 1.8m(6ft) longer wheelbase

in europe all trucks ( including smaller distribution 4x2 trucks) have diff locks both longitudinal and croslocks as serial equipment , but if you want you can get some trucks without them

I think this was a video to disgrace Mercedes. There is no way in hell that a 10x8 cannot get out of there unless driven by a scooter driver. I run 1979 to 2015 Mercedes and they would definitely get out of there with 35 to 45 tons

Looks like in this situation, if he lifted the middle axle he could of get out. The middle axle is supporting most of the weight because of the curve. But we can speculate as much as we want, if you wheren't there, you can't know the situation perfectly. It's not the driver his fault that he couldn't get out (if we leave the lifting of the middle axle out of discussion).

Think the driver had very little feel for his truck, rocking was the right way to recover it but he didn't understand the process at all, even though his guide was trying hard to direct. The center axle was a liability in this situation but it still should have driven out of there. Next: Have a talk to the dozer operator about that hump in the middle. .

Fair enough! But… the Mercedes still got stuck, and you can’t tell me with a straight face that it would have still been stuck had the middle axel been powered.

Those truckers totally ignore the presence, on that middle axle, of air valves which allow to deflate those 2 tires and lay the tractive wheels meet the ground... don't they?

Better to have all axels driven, in this case the centre axel got the truck stuck. Tatra 8 x 8 would have had no problems here.

+samus989 I think, that you know nothing about the Tatra. 5 axles equals gross weight 40 tons on public roads, we can see on this video, that this Merc is useless in offroad. Tatra can handle 40 tons in 6x6 configuraion on nonpublic roads or in offroad for example - mine . In 8x8 it goes up to the 50.

На таком приводе застрять в таких дорожных условиях, можно только молодому или полностью деревянному водителю. Хотя и энергичных попыток выехать не было. Ну подними ж ленивец и подгрузи ведущие мосты и раскачка, раскачка а не шлифовка. Может и лопата в помощь. Да техника есть вытащат, если додумаются. Диагноз: ездюк по твердому дорожному покрытию.

que desastre ese eje al medio sin tracción, si no tuviese ese eje pasaba por ahí sin problemas. Justo al medio se les ocurrió dejar un eje sin tracción, hubiesen dejado el mas de adelante si iban a dejar uno sin tracción , ese eje no deja que se apoyen bien los traccionados

I understand that, but if you intend to use the vehicle in off-road situations like this, that lazy axle will do just what it did in the video - get stuck. The front 4 wheels did not provide adequate force because the truck was essentially high-centered. If the middle axle was instead powered, situations like this would be avoidable. If you don’t intend to use it off-road, save the weight, cost, and parasitic power loss and make it 10x4. Otherwise, 10x10 would be much more effective.
