Got some good ones and a couple bad ones but the good ones far outweigh the bad ones. That capped bust quarter is excellent. Congrats!

1838 was a low mintage year because they were transitioning to the seated liberty design for quarters. this was the last capped bust quarter. retail value between $1700-2000. price goes up 30% with a CAC green bean.

I HATE graded Eagles!!! My God, there all going to come back as 69 or 70's! I think they should just grade it as "authentic", put it in a capsule, and call it good!!

Yeah, graded bullion in general just doesn't make sense to me in general. Haha

That 1838 25 cent piece is a beauty! The toughest year for the small size capped bust is the 1833 with the lowest mintage...

Do a search and you'll find NGC has a page explaining what the "Shipwreck Effect" is and what the different letter grades mean. Nice catch on the capped bust quarter.

Turning coin collecting into the equivalent of an expensive, requires no talent, arcade game. Wow! What will they think of next !? I guess NGC's marketing department figured out pretty well how to draw in/ appeal to the very specific demographic of novice collectors with the enticement of treasure seeking, lottery ticket winning, and instant gratification, rather than those persons that might be actual history buffs, or knowledge seekers, or wishing to gain a deeper understanding of numismatics. Certainly not for the person that wants to put in the time to gain the knowledge to seek possible treasures (maybe among raw ungraded coins in the broader marketplace!) and make discoveries along the way like learning to grade, beginning to recognizing rarity when they see it, making meaningful connections with knowledgeable collectors, dealers etc. Coin collecting for those with short attention spans that don't care much for research beyond looking up what the book says their new purchase/game prize is said to be worth

I can understand where your coming from, but I don't necessarily think it all or nothing in either direction. I am fairly new to collecting and enjoy the gamish aspect of the Vaultbox, but I also enjoy the parts of the hobby you've explained. I've purchased many raw coins and submitted a decent amount for grading, with both good and bad results. I agree that it is definitely helpful in learning more about the hobby to go through the whole process beginning to end. I guess I can throw up an old video of a PCGS unboxing I had done a while back. It's just terribly long and I haven't figured out the editing thing quite yet, haha. Anyways, I'm rambling. I'm just glad we live in a world where we can all enjoy the hobby in the exact manner that we want to. Happy collecting!

Good points, and you are right, 'each to their own'. Being a bit older probably makes me a little set in my particular way of seeing things. I used to feel the same way about photography, when you needed to understand aperture, focal length, film speed, shutter speed, depth of field etc. With the advent of point and shoot digital, without even requiring actual film, nearly everyone was able to take fairly decent pictures while having to understand practically nothing about the process, or the science. In other words, very little thought required, no entry fee, no learning curve. On a much smaller scale it;s like velcro shoe closures, as opposed to learning how to tie laces, or a meal out of a box as opposed to using raw ingredients and learning a recipe, where is the sense of learning, accomplishment, or mastery? Just my old fashioned opinion, and I do see that. Thanks for your point of view and politeness, and making me think more about it too! @@noobismatic

Appreciate the openness of thought. I can relate on photography as well. Photojournalism was my major and unfortunately timed it to graduate just as digital was crushing the profession. Still wouldn't give back what it taught me. Miss my time in the darkroom!
