I wish I can get my potato blossoms to fruit. It would be cool to plant the seeds and see what potatoes you get. I heard that that happens when their growing season is consistently cool, and, well... I live in Texas. It's cool one day and hot the next. 😁

I have a question regarding the arch for your pole beans. Do you have to take down the vines off of the archway every year .. and then the start the growing process over again .. or can you leave the roots in the ground .. and they will grow again in the Spring? Some of my greens and herbs come back again if I don't uproot them at the end of the growing season.
@SusansInTheGarden
3 жыл бұрын
I take down the vines every year. We have a very cold winter so they would not come back from the roots, even if they wanted to! You could certainly leave the roots in the ground because legumes are nitrogen fixers so there probably are nodules on the roots that store nitrogen, and that in turn would benefit the next crop that you plant in that bed. But you really need to take down the vines so they're not in the way. Beans are annual plants so they groom, bloom, develop pods and die in a single season. I haven't heard of them coming back from the roots.

Great tour Susan. Lucky you, no squash bugs or vine borders! This is our first backyard garden and I’ve been battling those pests since June! 😖 I’m growing our potatoes in buckets. Is that yours are just dying back to harvest them now? I enjoyed your tour. 😊💚

Thank you. I am so thankful we don't have those nasty squash pests and am hoping to keep it that way! It could be that the potatoes are just calling it a season.

I hate vine borers! The trombone zucchini look like they have a cucumber like type of vine that looks like the borers wouldn't be able to get into? Worth a try right?
@SusansInTheGarden
5 жыл бұрын
@@Iloveorganicgardening Anything is worth a try! One other thing I've heard of is to cover the seeds or seedlings with floating row cover as soon as you plant them and leave the cover on until they start blooming. It's supposed to protect them when the squash bugs and squash vine borers are most active.

As long as there is nothing wrong with the potatoes, it doesn't matter what the 'foliage' looks like because your not going to eat them. If you don't trust it, don't put it in your compost pile. Thanks for the information about those 'small' topside potato looking plants, no one has ever said that they grow, much less that they are 'POISONOUS'!

Thank you for sharing! So much good information. I'm going to try covering my swiss chard and beets next year. What did you use to make the hoops for your vegetable beds? Thanks.
@SusansInTheGarden
5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Elizabeth. The hoops were made from some old 1/2" drip irrigation tubing we had lying around. But you could make some from 1/2" sprinkler pipe, PVC pipe, or rebar or electrical conduit (by using a pipe bender).
@ElizabethM824
5 жыл бұрын
@@SusansInTheGarden Thanks. I had thought about using PVC pipe but I like that black pipe better. Blends in to the background better. My garden is close to house in view of all the windows so I like to make it look pretty! I will try the sprinkler pipe.

I notice you have covered some of the raised bed, what material is it and why? Many thanks
@SusansInTheGarden
3 жыл бұрын
There are 2 different materials shown in this video. The white fabric is known as floating row cover and is used as a barrier to keep insect pests away from certain crops that don't require pollination (such as cabbage family crops or beet family crops). There's also a bed that is covered with a fine netting (called "tulle") and that serves the same purpose but also permits good air circulation around the plants.

how can you secure the arch in windy area?
@SusansInTheGarden
3 жыл бұрын
The lower part of each arch has spikes on it, which are pushed down into the ground. If you feel that wouldn't be sufficient in your way, you could always pound in a metal stake at each arch and wire them together.
