Veni, veni Emmanuel; Captivum solve Israel, Qui gemit in exilio, Privatus Dei Filio. Gaude! Gaude! Emmanuel, Nascetur pro te, Israel! Veni, veni, O Oriens; Solare nos adveniens, Noctis depelle nebulas, Dirasque noctis tenebras. Veni, Clavis Davidica! Regna reclude caelica; Fac iter tutum superum, Et claude vias inferum. Veni, veni Adonai! Qui populo in Sinai, Legem dedisti vertice, In maiestate gloriae.

Same here, so good. Something about this is somehow both more solemn and more hopeful than the regular English version. Simply a perfect Advent hymn. It inspires that disposition of preparation that we too often forget should apply to Advent as much as it does for Lent.

Jay Nelsestuen -- In the old days, there was the sexist expression: "Translations are like women, if they are beautiful they are not faithful, and if they are faithful they are not beautiful." Not a nice analogy as to women, but the principle expressed about translations of poetry is true. I have some respect for translations that have the correct rhyme scheme and rhythm to be sung to the music in question yet are faithful enough to convey the meaning. Not easy to do, but it can be done sometimes.

Yes, it can. And JM Neale did a decent job. I just hadn't seen the literal translation posted yet, so I popped it in the combox and sent it off. There are some nuances that are missed in the poetic translation. :)

In traditional music like this song it is impossible to know how fast or slow it is supposed to be sung. It is up to the interpretation and/or taste of the artist to decide how fast it will be sung. Unless the composer specified the tempo. There is no right or wrong in this matter. It is a question of interpretation, taste, and in some cases even habit. For me this is a perfect rendition. Because they are great, and also because I am used to sing it in the same tempo

My only criticism, offered VERY humbly, as I love the KS, is that the opening plainchant and first polyphony were too strictly metered... I could have set a metronome to it. Not what plainchant is supposed to be. Nonetheless, WONDERFUL performance and beautiful arrangement!
@AggelikiKoutsoukou
10 жыл бұрын
KidIndigo1 I'm very sure you're right, my friend, and your comment is great. But I have to say that it's precisely this lively and strict metering (as slightly non-academic and a bit playful as it is -- maybe not exactly appropriate for the longing lyrics, heh) which captivated me in the first place. Imho it flows running so lightly and easily, so evenly, so perfectly, like a clystal stream of water, in a way that really grabs your ear and force you into such intense listening that by the time the first polyphony ends you need to pick up your jaw to close your mouth lol. Oh, heavenly KS!
@KidIndigo1
10 жыл бұрын
***** Fair enough. I can understand the draw and am glad it captivated you. After all, much of Baroque music attracts (at least to me) because of meter and precision. Nitpicking aside, still a stunning performance. :)

KidIndigo1 Exactly! I love Baroque choir music, I've been singing it as a choir member for decades. When sung right, with meter and percision like you said, it has this wonderful floating lightness, like consecutive delicate waves of sound... lol, I don't know how to describe it. Anyway, KS sing this piece like that, so wonderfully, nitpicking aside ;)

That's just their style. They sing everything faster than it's original tempo. Just listen to Önnis On Inimene! That speed, good God! Or just simply listen any madrigal they sing. They even sing Spem In Alium faster than any other performance. I think it's because there are only six of them and that gives them the opportunity to sing faster than a choir of 20-40 members. And maybe they sing fast, because they can't fill the music properly if they sing it slow due to the number of singers.

I don't think it's as much thoughtlessness to the meaning as to a choice shaping. The chorus, gaude, gaude, is often shaped the same way as the verses, so if you put a pause after Emmanuel and before solve, the ear almost expects it after each Emmanuel. For what it's worth, I think their way is preferable.

Just beautiful, though, as in Bach, the purer harmonic register of boy trebles is preferable. I especially love how in each verse they intelligently do not take a senseless breath after the final Emmanuel as do most sadly thoughtless audiences who don't think about the meaning of the words they sing, especially for old familiar ones. Rejoice, Rejoice, Emmanuel [NO BREATH] shall come to thee, O Israel.

Yes, in Gregorian chant there is no harmony of multiple, concurrent voices, so monophonic, yes. There are two exceptions to this. First, the echo of the earlier tone may still linger and may form a harmony with the now-sung tone. Second - and of this I am not exactly certain - some, perhaps the oldest chant, properly classified perhaps pre-Gregorian, uses the drone (see wikipedia: drone (music)).

In Classical Latin it is indeed pronounced as a "w" however, this is Christian Latin so it is pronounced "v". So yes you would be right if it were not for the fact that this is Christian Latin, not Classical.
