I did a ride from Hamburg South through Germany, Czechia, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and France, and the most memorable ride was between Munich and Innsbruck through Garmisch. What a route! I remember riding that unpaved road you took up out of Innsbruck in the other direction in the bucketing snow, boy was it fun! Great video, and congrats on your stellar recent PBP!

I can't believe you actually recognise that unpaved road! The trip you made sounds like a great one, how long did it take? There's nothing better than the mountainous parts of Europe. I'm hoping to get over the channel and do some more exploring later this year. In the meantime, Bonne route to you!

Of all the fancy bike kit you have my favourite is definitely the floppy pink campagnolo cap. It’s like a lucky mascot/charm. And to think of all the places that cap has been with you on these amazing adventures. You do realise it has to be worn for all your rides…it wouldn’t be the same without the floppy cap. 😁😁😁

Nice one! I've had that cap (fairly obviously) for years now, and it's so completely and utterly knackered. Earlier this year, I thought, Well, that's it, it's really time for the bin, and began wearing a new one. But yesterday, I was getting stuff ready for a (very) long ride I'm doing later this week and realised - there is only ONE cap I can wear. And I'm delighted to say I found it at the back of the cupboard, definitely not in the bin just yet... It will live to ride another day!😆

The distances you travel in a day - insane! I'm near Seattle and the longest I've done is the Seattle to Portland some years (ages) ago. My knees said enough to hiking so I went bought a brompton. Won't do those stupid long days that you do, but do plan to work up to 60 or 70k. Am planning to do the ViaRhona in October - little late in the year, but heading south so downhill and into warmer weather. Thanks very much for the inspiration.

Thanks Dave, ‘tis a pleasure and if there is inspiration I hope it leads to happy days out on the Brompton. It doesn’t matter how far you go, there are plenty out there who ride a lot further and faster than me. When I rode to Edinburgh and back last year there were several Brompton riders doing the same ride, I thought they were nuts but they seemed to whizz along!!!

That is just amazing. What you do is almost superhuman and some things are really mad😉 (in a positive way) and dangerous. So awesome to see the ride through all seasons. We discussed the route some time ago and I was guessing wrong where you went. You took the shorter way from Innsbruck via Seefeld, I guess, instead of the Fernpass a little bit in the west. The road up to Seefeld is not fun at all but I am glad you survived and maybe you had luck because it was not in the middle of the season. All those german motorists to clog the roads and its so extreme sometimes that not long ago, the government from Tirol made some rules for self defense. Drivers who were passing the area were no longer allowed to leave the motorway because it was totally messy and chaotic on almost all small roads and they stopped the motorists from going over "secret ways" everywhere just to drive around and terrorising the inhabitants of the villages and towns. They blocked the motorway exits for german drivers... But thats another topic and shows how bad it can be to cycle in alpine valleys (of Austria and the other countries as well). Strasbourg and the special bridge ( Die "Brücke der 2 Ufer") for pedestrians and cyclists and the canal, so many good memories🤩. Your Kids do not watch your channel? How dare they!?😃 One fine day they will be proud, I guess they are already proud of what you are doing or ashamed because they can not keep up with you. This video was such a pleasure to see and I am glad you fixed your computer problems. Thank you for sharing that. Liebe Grüße🙋♀

Spot on! Yes, it was the road via Seefeld, but I'd actually started from Götzens (only because staying in Innsbruck was so expensive) and then Scharnitz and Mittenwald before heading via some sort of daft short cut to Garmisch. Problem was, I'd planned the route in a rush, months previously, and had no idea about that road to Seefeld. Not much fun at all, as you say. But I have to disagree about the drivers - my experience was that the Austrians were pretty bad tempered but the Germans very respectful and calmer. Maybe I got lucky?? Another thing was the impact of the weather on my mood - it doesn't matter how beautiful it is, if you're cold and wet it's difficult to enjoy. The sun had been shining so much in Italy I enjoyed even some very banal sections (eg Trento, very boring actually) whereas it took me a while to appreciate what I was riding through during that snow further north (around Garmisch, Oberammergau etc). In retrospect I should have gone via Ammerwald and Füssen and got some scenes of Ludwig's castle in the background but I took my kids there a few years ago and wanted to explore different roads. Another trip, perhaps. Thanks for watching and commenting as always! Hope you're riding well and enjoying the early summer weather...

@@londoncenturies Hello Londoncenturies. Yes there are always different roads and especially in this area, one different decision, just one later turn and you end in a different valley and the experience of riding is totally different. The Lechtal is also one thing I can highly recommend for cycling. The motorists😄 you are right the germans are not to blame for everything all the time. I f we look back so many evil tings started on Austrains soil😅. Just kidding and I am happy that you experienced only friendly german drivers in that area. Schloss Neuschwanstein, Oh dear, oh dear. I liked it from remote and I hated it coming closer and closer (20years ago befor Instagram...). All the people around there are so horrific and realizing beeing a part of it and not liking me made me go as quick as I came. YOur chanel is awesome, thanks for sharing your experiences. Fascinating! What an adventure? If I did this, it would be my biggest achievement, whereas you do this kind of thing all the time! So many questions - how do you maintain the fitness for ultra endurance rides around work and family? What line of work takes you to Milan and gives you the time off to take a week to get home!? Do you get lonely being on your own for that long? Is your wife understanding about the time you invest on the bike? Any PBP plans? And DO bore us about tyres!!
@londoncenturies

I'm self employed and have to pay for everything out of my own pocket so it was a week's holiday for me, and therefore expensive, but it really helped to grab the cheapest Airbnb's months in advance by planning the route. I'm on a constant mission to find ways of making this sort of thing cheaper but basically a lot of the time that means camping, which is ok in May-Sept but no way in March/April! PBP plans = yes, more on this later! Thanks for watching and happy riding!

Great ride..How much was the total for AirBnB etc. I'm about halfway thru watching. Apologies in the mention this later in the Vid
@londoncenturies
2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, I can't remember exactly how much in total BUT I can tell you that the way I did it (for the Venice trip) was to book in advance, and I planned it (with each night stop) months ahead. The advantage was I did the booking way before - some of them in Oct/Nov the year before, and therefore got some very cheap deals (I seem to remember the airfield place in France was about £20, and Bolzano was great value too maybe £30) but Austria was hugely expensive even if booked 6 months in advance. Of course the disadvantage was that I was committed to making it to each nightstop and couldn't afford to go wrong. So mechanical problems would have been VERY nasty, but fortunately I didn't have any. And I'd budgeted for a cheap place on the final leg towards the ferry but never used it, figuring I could just push on and sleep on the boat. Which, for a 2 hour crossing, was completely crazy but cheap!

Super inspiring ride. Thanks for sharing. I'd imagine this was much harder than you made it appear, or your fitness level is otherwordly, or both. How many hours did you ride every day? If you rode Venice to London again, is there anything you would do differently?
@londoncenturies
Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching and commenting, inspiration is something I'm hoping to achieve, so that's great to hear. No, I don't think my fitness is quite at that level but I'd done a few longer rides leading up to it. It was more the day-after-day aspect I was scared of (I made sure there were a couple of 'easy' days and that turned out to be a really good idea). Hours a day: 2 x easy days of about 4 or 5. Most days: 10-12 total. Last day: 19 hours!! (but that includes the ferry, I forgot to stop the Garmin because I was so knackered). Last day was a killer. Things to do differently next time: yes, there are. Things to keep: the direction (ie, starting south, riding north, to get the mountains out of the way first). The route through Italy, Austria and Germany was fabulous, definitely keep that. But from Strasbourg north, I'd take a different route, staying mostly in France instead of the Germany-Luxembourg-Belgium route I took. It's too built up (and hillier than expected) to do again. Stay very slightly west of the French border, I reckon. Are you thinking of riding it yourself?
@HeadPack

@@londoncenturies Thank you for taking the time to elaborate. Good to know about easier days once in a while. Intuitively, that makes more sense than complete rest days. Can see why you might prefer staying in France. Some good memories riding north from Strasbourg, albeit nowhere near as far as you did. I am just starting out with bike touring, so trying to learn from experienced riders like you are. Perhaps, one day, I can ride parts of your tour. Have bookmarked the video for later.
