Chavon was a family friend of ours. I still remember that night he got killed. My sisters and mother were crying so hard. A few days later we went to his mom's in Oakwood, paid respects and did what we could for her. She was heartbroken. Sad stuff. Growing up here lots of innocent people were killed; either a case of assuming they're gang affiliated or hit by stray bullets. Edit: if I remember correctly, Chavon was waiting at the bus stop of Inglewood ave and Venice blvd. He was going home.

I grew up the Culver City Mar Vista Gardens projects and went to school at Venice High. I remember hearing gun shots so often to the point they sound like fireworks. I remember waking up with bullet holes in my window on the second story of the apartment and bullet holes on the side of the car and metal trash cans. The most traumatizing memory was waking up at 3am to a bunch of people running, next thing you know, Bang Bang! The guy got shot and died on my lawn. Scary times in the hood back then.

Proverbs 4:14-22 Do not enter the path of the wicked, And do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not travel on it, Turn away from it and pass on. For they do not sleep unless they have done evil, And their sleep is taken away unless they make someone fall. For they eat the bread of wickedness, And drink the wine of violence. But the path of the just is like the shining sun, That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know what makes them stumble. My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.

I never truly understood the whole purpose of gangs, regardless of race. I love the fact I had a bond, closeness and brotherhood fellow gangs had for each other from their neighborhoods. But then I was like, you guy's kill your own race...sell drugs to your own race and community....fuck each other over to the cops if you get caught up or over some bitch, money or drugs. I've had very close friends/ homies from different neighborhoods, majority of them in and out of jail or lifers...or hooked on drugs...or dead from gang activity or drugs. I've been to more funerals that I just stop counting after a while. That's why I never got jumped in to any neighborhood, it never made any sense to me at the end of the day. I was a really lost kid, but I knew I didn't wanna be a statistic of getting shot dead for a neighborhood that I don't even own property on, or getting hooked on any drugs or ending up jail for the rest of my life. At least I knew I didn't want those things for me at that time.

Culver City existed before any blood or crip neighborhood existed. They choose red since the 1950 or 1960. Back then mostly all gangs in Southern California were biracial gangs both black and brown claim the same gang nothing new. The only thing that kinda washed the history is when the politics really hit the streets.

The LAPD crack down kicked in full force, knocking down doors of neighborhood crack houses and serving warrants in Oakwood and the projects during the mid to late 90's. Key search LAPD On The Beat - It was a show which was filmed out of the Pacific Div. LAPD and covered all of Culver City and the Oakwood area. It last aired in 1999, I believe...
