Black Sabbath were the first to make sound commercially about occult stuff, there's no question about that. But they were always at a distance, Geezer still says that today. Venom have been around since the late 1970's and their first album (Welcome to Hell) in 1981 had a mixed heavy metal and punk sound, very dirty, very heavy for the time and obviously satanic. The second album was then the namesake of a new type of music. In the end it doesn't give a damn how it was later interpreted by the Norwegians. The term BLACK Metal comes from Venom. You can't take that away from them.
@Broccoli_Highkicks
I'll grant that they were never the global commercial success that Black Sabbath were, but as far as being the first with occult themes, Black Widow's debut record Sacrifice came out about the same time as Sabbath's, and that is full-on Satanic/occult in its lyrical themes. The music was more psychedelic, though. Also, I think too much was and is made of Black Sabbath's penchant for occult and Satanic lyrics/imagery. Sure, they mention the devil in a few songs, but they were never "advocates" for satanism or the occult.
