It was about 25 knots and rising quickly at the start of the video when I decided to reef early. I switched the 70% jib to a storm jib and put a 2nd reef in the main. I wish I had more footage, but the camera battery died, and I wasn’t comfortable changing it single handed downwind. After the video I sailed with just the storm jib for a bit, then put a 3rd reef in the main.

Bought a used Venture 17 that was only one year old and practically new. I was only 21 years old myself and practically new. My girlfriend and I would go on sailing-dates. Then one day we eloped and sailed to Catalina Island and got married. We stood on a hill overlooking Avalon bay. The taxi-cab driver was our witness. That honeymoon night a northeastern blew-in (a nasty local windstorm.) There were breakers rolling in the bay. I worried about our little boat, thrashing about out there on her mooring. I was going to leave the motel room to check. I decided however, it wouldn't make a very good honeymoon memory (kind-of like cheating on your wedding night.) That was back in 1975. Today we live on a 40 sailboat and have for the past 10 years. We still like to sail to Catalina but it isn't nearly as much fun as those days spent on the little Mac. The End.

The boat does pretty well in heavy weather. The hull hasn't been reinforced, but it needed a chainplate for the backstay. The double reefed main and storm jib does have more weather helm than normal. I put a 3rd reef in the main after the camera batteries died, but it doesn't perform well upwind like that.

Naill biting from this end....feeling tense and wet just watching it....could not quite make out the audio explatives when the main needed dropping...but sure to experience it myself earlier in the season out of Prince Rupert this summer/autumn...making sure to get to shore before the October weather in the straits and channels. Great description of the reality fishers and sailors meet in their experience. Good on you for getting our there and testing your self. But you where nowhere near 30 knots. White caps are constant at around 25. It looked like you might have been in 15 knots. It feels like a lot more when your in a little C/B lake boat. I remember sailing in my Dad's O'day 20 CB boat in the SF bay in 20 knots and it felt like we were in the roaring 40's. Shooting off waves spray shooting over the back of the boat. Lots of fun.

I've been very happy with the Honda 8.8 on it. I wouldn't go bigger. I'd definitely recommend a long shaft. I have a BF5 on a Pocket Rocket 22 and it can't push her to hull speed, but uses .25 GPH instead of the 8.8's .5 GPH. She's a lot more slippery than the Venture too.

I'm about to buy a 1966 Venture 21 (similar hull and keel) and have been trying to find out if it will handle rough weather like this. Did you re-inforce the hull or anything else or can stock McGregors take real sailing like this on the ocean? Nice storm jib, any weather helm with that set up-up on the double reefed main? Any idea what the wind speed was in the video? Also, how does she handle in a following sea of that size? Thanks for any help. Nice video!
