The salt flats are worth stopping by to see if you are in the area, even if there are no events going on. It's kind of surreal driving out there. There is no reference points so you don't get a sensation of speed beyond your rpm, wind noise etc. There are no visual reference points. We took an old conversion van out there. Obviously, we weren't doing speed runs or anything, we were just messing around. I did set the cruise control at 40 and went to sit in the back for a moment. lol I wouldn't advise doing that but I did manage to get away with it and didn't get on any videos about stupid ways people killed themselves. Anyways, if you are ever on a trip in the area, it's worth a stop to check it out. It's very surreal to drive on but be careful, use common sense. It's easy to get lost and help is a long ways away if you get hurt.

The "Flats" hosts multiple CLASSES of WLSR attempts - and achievements. (It's not just the "absolute" WLSR attempts that make the news - such as Thrust SSC). There are also class LSRs for everything from heavily-modified street cars to "heck YEAH I drove it here" vehicles (Gale Banks Engineering had regularly shown up with vehicles in these classes - from cars to CUVs to SUVs.)

The salt flats has an area if 40 miles squared, according to the curvature equation formula, you'd experience 1667.57 feet of earths curvature. It also says, the earths curvature can be measured and seen, between every 8 inches of each mile. With going at speeds over 250 miles per hour, once you hit the earths curvature you fly off the earth into space.

I don’t really think Thrust type vehicles should count as they are more like fighter jets than cars. They don’t put power down through the wheels but instead use massive jets. Thrust had tiny metal wheels whose only purpose was to keep contact with the ground to make it a land speed record.

@jamesshunt5123

Might have something to do with their 10,000hp engines and their huge rear wheels. Not amazing at all. Fairly simple actually. Try driving a top fuel dragster for a full measured mile at top speed which is what is required for the land speed record to count. I hope the engine can take the full power for 20-30 seconds. Longevity isn't really an issue when you just race for 4 seconds. Tell me, why did nobody ever attempt a land speed record with a top fuel engine?? I'll tell you why. Because they are designed for 4 second drags. Most engines can produce an insane power if they only have to last for a few seconds every time. But when you start chasing outright speed then you need something which will LAST repeated runs at top speed for several *minutes* . In short. Your comparison is childish. It's like somebody bringing up an hydrogen bomb in a discussion about the most powerful and accurate handgun. Never compare apples and oranges. Only kids and fools do that.

@@jamesshunt5123 the cost of a nitromethane engine set up and fuel is outrageous. It is 35 dollars a gallon. They arent a simple case of powerful because they dont have to live long.
