This is a review of the competitor, a lightweight competition gi by Venum. The jacket is a single weave made from 100 percent cotton, and the pants are a mid weight cotton twill. This gi is IBJJF approved, weighs 3lbs 9oz, comes in white, blue and black and retails for 149.99 to 164.99 on bjjwarehouse.com
Design
The competitor is a colorful gi, and it's got a mix of patches and embroidery on the jacket and pants. Up top you have Venum branded shoulder patches along with "Jiu Jitsu" embroidered on the chest and the easy to recognize, menacing snake's head on the lower left front. The back features a massive piece of Venum embroidery. Inside the jacket is a soft cotton shoulder panel covered in Venum logos and branded seam tape inside the sleeve cuff.
The patches from the shoulders also run down the sides of each leg on the pants along with some small embroidery, which are complemented by bright yellow belt loops and a green flat drawstring. Yellow contrast stitching and trim run throughout the gi.
Fit and Feel
I'm 5'8" and 168 pounds, and the A2 is a spot on fit for me. The single weave jacket is soft and comfortable, although the seam tape in the cuffs is a little scratchy. The pants are comfortable as well and have a little extra room through the waist and the ankle cuffs. You can see by the measurements chart that you can expect some shrinkage. I've washed this gi a couple times now, and I hang dry it most of the way and then toss it in the dryer for 10 minutes to soften it up.
Build Quality
The Competitor has the standard armpit, side vent and crotch reinforcements along with triple stitching throughout the major stress zones. The pant cuffs have an additional six rows of stitching on them. I'm always impressed by the embroidery work on Venum gis. The huge piece on the back is tightly woven and doesn't have any loose threads, and the thin script on the chest piece is accurate and clean looking. The yellow contrast stitching runs mostly uniform throughout the gi. All of the patches and the shoulder lining are sewn on well and look good. The gi is definitely ready for whatever you'd like to throw at it.
In Action
Whenever I see this gi, it reminds me of Leandro Lo. He's a maniac and completely amazing. I love watching his matches. So when I put on this gi I think, "I'm going to pass the crap out of some people's guards today." The results are inconclusive. You might not be able to suddenly roll like Lo, but you'll want to.
The Competitor is a lot of fun to roll in. The single weave jacket is lightweight and breathable so you don't overheat while training. The collar is soft and pliable so you'll have to pay attention to your opponent's grips, but it's also great for wrapping around your opponent's neck. Good times. The pants are roomy and easy to move around in as well.
Conclusion
Venum is one of the most recognizable brands in BJJ and MMA. They sponsor some of the biggest names out there, and they make a lot of great products. The Competitor certainly is one of them. It's a great fit, built to last and, to me, looks great.
