The European Aurignacian and later Gravettian figurative representations form part of the so called "Transitional Period" and fall within a natural state of liminality. What we are seeing in these Aurignacian figures is a process of transferring symbolic belief and ritual from one group to another. Neanderthals of northwestern Europe had been practicing the same symbolic behaviour tens of thousands of years prior to our arrival on the scene. Figurines from the Aurignacian period are likely to be Cro-magon mans interpretation of a Neanderthal symbolic practice. We are not as clever as we think we are, we simply inherited a long symbolic tradition from Neanderthals. To be continued.....

Maybe the person who wore this was the head of the figure.. applying the talismans power directly to one self.

Can she be giving birth? The position reminds me of the Cycladic island female representations where feet are generally not present. At some point it was decided they are lying down. Though they think those were to accompany burials this seems more active and animated

When you say ,,,the earliest figurative art do you mean the human figuee,,,or do you mean the earliest representational art, Because if the latter then surely the Stadel Lion Man is the earliest If the former then OK, Would appreciate response
