Novotna's serve and volley game in grass court is indeed a treat to watch every time

Sisters were so arrogantly brought up that they considered they would wipe out Novotna, Graf or Sanchez easily at age of 17-18..but they learnt their lessons and change their attitude in 2000 onwards

They dominated when Graf and Novotna had already retired, and Hingis would soon follow. Then Henin came along and beat them, and when she retired they would get on top again.

You all are such haters. 😂 Just say you don't like Venus! 😂 That actually sounds better 😂...1998 was the first year that Venus played a full schedule on tour. Her passion for the game and success was mistaken as arrogance because she challenged the top players and believed she could beat them. Don't get mad because she just didn't roll over. THIS IS SPORT! 😂...By the way, Henin's and Venus H2H was 7-2 in Venus favor 😂

@@lanceking3147 i am not hater i admire Williams sisters, Venus in particular, but it is a fact they were arrogant which looked funny at some moments and certainly added up to general WTA atmosphere back then

Novotna then Graf in 1999 teaches some valuable lesson to Venus. Frankly grass is the only surface where Venus excels, on hard she underachieved with just 2 us open titles & zero A.O title (in fact she didn't reached any hard court slam finals from 2003 A.O to 2017 A.O 😱😱), on slower surface she sucks & her longevity is overrated. She didn't win any slams post the age of 28. Her game is pretty one dimensional , didn't have much variety & she was easily surpassed by next gen.

I agreed, Venus game is one dimensional the reason she had more success at Wimbledon. She is OK on hard courts but she never got to another US Open final since 2002 and yes it took her 14 years to make another Australian Open final. Out of all of Venus main rivals in her era she is the only one to have never won the Australian Open. She never even got to the semi final at the French Open since 2002. Something definitely happened to Venus in her career how can someone go from winning 29 titles in just five years 1998-2003 to win just 20 in 12 years 2004-2016. Very strange but think this is a combination of a few things injures, all the losses to her sister Serena, her auto amune disease and her outside intresting outside the game. She runs several businesses. Nevertheless, 2 US open titles is still impressive she had chances to win more but was never able to. Serena had more variety in her game than Venus one of the reasons she was able to dominate the new era. What is also strange in 2017 she had a good season making final at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and WTA finals but she never won a title in 2017. Think this affected her confidence after 2017 losing all those finals her rankings went down and she never got pass the 3rd of a grand slam since 2017.

She has seven majors to her credit, not to shabby.

@@jess4metoo Yeah, definitely and she could have won more than 7 grand slams it wasn't for her illness and injuries. Venus is a underrated champion but at the same time yes her game is one dimensional. She's one of the greatest female tennis player of all time not many women have won 5 Wimbledon titles. Only 4 other women have won more than 5 Wimbledon titles in history. Serena stood in her way too Venus lost 7 grand slam finals to her younger sister where Venus won only 2 grand slam finals against Serena.

@@marfu1119 this is a really harsh and myopic view of her career. First, Venus' game is a lot of things but one dimensional is not one of them. She was heavy handed and error prone for sure but this was mostly as a result of ab and knee issues which showed as she went from being the Queen of Aces to disastrous double faults. She said that the earliest signs of the autoimmune disease showed up in late 2007 and became more obvious in 2009-2010.

Can you imagine if Novotna played Venus at her peak in the early 2000s. Venus would wipe her off the court. The last time they played was in Miami 1999 Venus won. In 1999, Venus improved alot from 1998. Novotna was commentating during Venus 2000 Wimbledon win and Novotna said she was glad not competing anymore by not having to play Venus who was hitting the ball very hard.

But they played this match in 98 so who cares what would happen, i am glad Jana won here as she deserved it

I'm not so sure that's true. One of Jana's real strengths was that she was what the players call a "spoiler" - she stops you from playing your best game. Her slice drove a lot of players mad. You can see how frustrated Venus gets at times here.
