the new posts are much better posts and they look stunning! But I would not make the change since the old posts were fine and they had already in place. you have tons of choices to make them look nicer. as far as the water-proofing /moisture concern goes, can we just use silicon sealant to seal the seams around the beam pocket you talked about? or use some oily painting? or some waterproofing stuff?
@diyforknuckleheads

Mate, changing the posts....even though it took a lot of extra work and money....was well with it! The trouble with the original pine posts is that they damage too easily. Kids are careless and bang their bikes up against them and hit them with various sporting equipment (accidentally) which can takes chunks out of the post or dent them. The posts l have now are bullet proof and look just as good now as when l put them in. 👍👍😁

Neville....what l did was remove the post, one at a time and then cut a Tonka post to exactly the same height and checkout dimensions of the pine post that was removed. It was an absolute mission but worth every minute. I sold the pine posts to the guy that sanded my floors 👍😁🇦🇺

Nice one Shane, those posts look better, and yes, I've had some posts rot out as you suggested. Using a pin anchor, did you have any issues backing out the screws to replace the posts? They're easy to install when new, but I wonder how that type of anchor goes for replacement.

Dude you are absolutely nuts. When you posted in Renovate Forums (non-attributed advice btw!) I'd assumed this was an unroofed pergola exposed to weather. They're under a roof! Those top check outs aren't even exposed!? Worst case scenario, you could do this exact job later instead of now, when you decide you're unhappy with the mild checking in your pine posts... in 30 years time. Bonkers
@diyforknuckleheads
3 жыл бұрын
Couldn't disagree more John. It was the best decision we made on the house. They look SO much better than painted pine posts and almost 5 years down the track they look as good as the day they were installed!! Secondly, the posts can't be changed without an incredible amount of work retrospectively as they are inside the eave line which means that l would have to pull down the eave sheets as well as the waterproof plasterboard on the ceiling that covers the inside of the posts. I stand by my decision. Thanks for watching 👍

Would I have changed them? Aaahh no. It comes down to looks and cost. The new ones look absolutely gorgeous but the rot & durability "issue" can be made a non-issue. The H3 & lamination would have been fine and lasted for as long as you (and your kids) kept them painted. Into the 100+ years. All you had to do is prime the proposed inset cuts you mentioned with a decent oil based primer, or even treat and then prime them. And to be triple-sure even, coat the joint faces with a paintable sealant acting also like a glue. Fully sealed.
@diyforknuckleheads
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the observation CW. There were probably two reasons for the change that bothered me apart from the durability issues that you have addressed. The first one was that l wanted the posts to match the deck and secondly the pine posts chip and mark to easily especially when you have small kids on bikes and the odd wayward cricket bat swing to deal with 👍😁

@diyforknuckleheads

Hazzy, the finish l needed at the top of the posts for the front of the drop down eave required the beam in the posts to be dead straight for the entire length of the verandah. Having the beam not fully housed in enabled me to fudge with it a bit in the checkout. I hope that makes sense.
