Like others I have only discovered Verdelot during the past year and I,'ve been involved in singing and conducting this kind of music for 40 years. And goodness what a find. Music of such breathtaking beauty and consumer skill. But that's what's so wonder. Always new and wonderful things to discover.

Astonishingly beautiful. So lucky to come across this perfect recording; thanks for making it available. There so little opportunity for hearing this sort of music being sung live. And I had never heard of this composer and I'm over 70. So much beauty is left unexplored.

What a find! Both the motet and the composer. Thank you hugely.

I sang this with my college madrigal choir. This lovely performance brings back so many memories! ...especially rumbling out all those low Fs in B2

Did you sing Bass? The Tallis Scholars sings this in A flat (a minor third above written pitch). So perhaps it would have been easier for you to sing it in this pitch. :)

@@pannonia77 I did indeed! I trust Tallis Scholars know what their doing when they transpose. But I still think deep bass notes make things a little more atmospheric and lovely, especially at the cadences

This motet is a pure delight. Too bad Peter Phillips does seemingly ignore musica ficta, though.

Does anyone else hear Josquin Des Prez's influence in this, especially in portions of the baritone part?

Yes, the piece quotes the first three lines of Josquin's famous Ave Maria. In the first part the Septima vox (Soprano II) which sings a different text than the other 6 voices, and in the second part the Quinta vox (Baritone) and Septima vox (Soprano II). To the words: Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum they quote the melody of Josquin's Ave Maria. Another interesting thing, that while the Quinta and Septima vox sing Josquin's melody, the Soprano I simultaneously sings the beginning of the plainchant melody of Ave Maria. So yes, this is not only a beautiful piece, but also a very masterfully contrapuntal one.

Lovely but the pitch they sing in is much higher than what is notated

selgeaus. Yes. The Tallis Scholars sing it a minor third above written pitch. I noted it also in the description.

@@pannonia77 Heh, it felt like at least a tone - no wonder I was struggling to sing the top of the Superius part... XD
