The man is so tall that he doesn't need a podium. What is the idea behind the second bass drum? Is it used as a sort of natural subwoofer, only to amplify the sound waves that the first one makes?
@xavipercu

Indeed. It’s called resonance by sympathy. It means that the first skin, upon receiving the vibrations when the is struck, makes the other three resonate and creates the effect that two bass drums are played at the same time (which is really what is happening).

I don't understand why people like this performance. The balance in the choir is really weird. At points like 1:00 you are supposed te be able to very cleary hear the tenors and basses so that the rythm is emphasized, you can bearly hear them. The timpanies are also to loud in many places (1:12 you shouldn't be able to count every stroke) and the bass drum to soft where you want them to really impact (0:39). Furthermore, there is just a general lack a of drama. Points like 1:49, it supposed to be snarly and terrifying.

One piece of information is enough to affirm that this interpretation by Currentzis, at this fast tempo, is absurd and unfounded: We are looking at religious music, which premiered in the Church of San Marco, in Milan. And in that church, as in any other ⛪️ or Catholic cathedral, you could not go at that tempo, because nothing would be understood, and it is evident that the intention of the composer was for his music to be understood in the place where he knew it was going to be released
@tony_2178
2 жыл бұрын
If you listen to Toscanini's interpretation, it has a very similar tempo to Currentzis'. Toscanini knew Verdi personally so I can imagine that this fast tempo expresses the actual composer of this masterpiece.
@63Anul
2 жыл бұрын
The tempo cannot be set with absolute objectivity by the composer (and even less so if he is deaf, like Beethoven). And even less by Toscanini. The choice of tempo is a subjective thing. But there is one objective and certain thing: what the acoustics of a room allow. And it is absolutely certain that the day of the premiere could not be at this tempo, if the interpreters wanted the public to understand something (and even understand each other), because the acoustics of the church of San Marco in Milan do not allow that tempo.
