This one is absolutely true! I have found that if you list all the skills you have on an application, prospective employers will try to force you to give the company free services. I once made the mistake of listing all my skills to a company and they tried to get me to apply these skills and not pay extra for them. Didn't happen. I told them what I charged to do these things and that these prices were set and there was no way I'd be doing it for less. I was fired on the spot.

I had the same problem in the early 1990s with an employer who declined to support my efforts to obtain IT skills and qualications. No financial support, no time off - even had to take PTO for the exams. After 3 years of effort, 100% in my own time and at my own expense, they then *demanded* I sort out a defunct network that someone on a higher salary had already messed up. At no extra salary, and over above my normal workload. They got the bums rush. Subsequently legally enforced.

It’s amazing that they wouldn’t kick in a little extra pay since they’re all ready, fronting her vacation time and health insurance and all that. When they pay that translation services, the charge has to cover all that as well. On a parallel track, I was once talking over the phone with a representative from the company that gave me my HELOC loan. I actually didn’t want to take any more money out, but they were saying that I could not take any more money out. This was because when they had it initiated the loan, the house was worth more than it was at the moment that we spoke. However I still had about $150,000 in equity in the home. I said to the guy, you mean I can have $150,000 of equity but you think that I should not be allowed to take any more out, even $10,000? The rep answered that it sounded like I was trying to be too logical.

I'm of the idea that if you want to be truly successful in a company, build relationships, and a reputation, you will be of maximum usefulness to your employer. Then it becomes a bargaining chip later when asking for more money. And if they aren't the type of company that rewards your efforts, then it's time to move along. The more you know, the more valuable you are.

She even says it right there. They don't have many French or Spanish speaking clients, so the amount of times you'd be asked to translate or interpret will likely be once in a blue moon.
