Yeah... that exact problem is absolutely out of control here in canada. It's happening everywhere you look... the worst (best??) example I can think of is our prime minister.. he's half way to riding a little orange bus to school while wearing a full face helmet.. yet he was still made the leader of the liberal party and eventually became the prime minister of Canada. If he's not the poster child for promoting idiocy, I don't know who possibly could be.

It's called the Peter Principle, named for the author of a 1970s book on the subject. People rise in authority and responsibilities, until they reach a level they are not competent to handle. Instead of returning to their previous level, they tend to sit at their level of incompetence. This is the reason behind military 'up or out' policies. The private sector could learn from this.

I once had an annual review where i got fantastic marks... on everything but "finishes projects in a timely manner". This low grade affected my raise. I asked my manager about it. It was due to a particular huge project that had been sitting on a Co workers desk for 2 weeks. It was dumped on my desk 2 DAYS before the deadline. I requested an extension, and got it done. She had been told by that more senior co worker that I'd had it for the full 2 weeks. I explained the truth, she looked into it, and changed my review and increased my raise.

EXACTLY! If these "managers" think Public Punishment is acceptable, then "Treat Others How they Treat you" / "Treat Others How you Wish to be Treated" WILL be enacted. It's absolutely strange that these types of "managers" believe non-managerial staff will handle such things gracefully and accept it yet they can not be bothered to do the same course of action. People FOLLOW Leaders, and as such, if a Leader does a general action, it is presumed safe to do, too. That's how society has generally worked, especially of smaller numbers, and in this case: departments.

I worked at a family owned company, and when COVID hit we were sent to work from home. I went from 80+ emails at the end of the day to 0. My productivity increased immensely, and my work was nearly perfect. Unfortunately, before this I had a falling out with my mother...who was also my manager. She texted me one day to tell me to come get my personal belongings from my office since we were going to all be coming back soon and it was inappropriate to have these items in my office once clients started coming back in to the office too. To be fair, the items were boxes of things, not decorations. That's a separate story. The way she worded the text was a huge red flag that something was up, so I cleaned out my entire office and made sure the computer was completely clear of all personal items too. Maybe two weeks after that, she sent an email at 9am(ish) to me and copied our CFO and CEO asking me why I had 200 unread emails. I had 20. I knew what she was trying to do, and both the CEO and CFO could have AnyDesk'd in to my laptop at any time to see if she was right. They never did. They outright lied in order to have an excuse to fire me. I'm sure they spread that lie to my coworkers, so when I went to return the laptop, I made multiple copies of my inbox right when my mom emailed me about my nonexistent 200 emails and left them inside the laptop for them to see. I still have copies of those screen shots.

@@Shadow_Banned_Conservative My current boss likes to make up rules on the fly, to suit their need of the day, and pretend like it's always been the rule. Last week they sent out a group text saying that because someone sent a purchase form to budgeting instead of directly to them that they didn't get their daily audit done on time and that this is wrong, that we're supposed to send the form to them and that they send them to budgeting. However, in the 3 years that I've been working for them, that form has always been sent to budgeting, not to them, and it's never been an issue. (The idea being that budgeting confirms/approves the amount before sending it to my boss to be included in their audit.) Last month it was about expense amounts. They were saying we were allowed to expense out up to $100 when there's literally a memo from home office taped up that says it's $50. (Weekly expense for office supplies like pens and printer paper.) But when their boss came in for their weekly meeting and was like "I see we spent $67 on printer paper, who approved that?" they had no problem saying it was so & so who did it and there was never any official approval given. And, unfortunately, it's completely true. So & so did do it and they didn't get official approval. (Official approval requires a particular form to be filled out.) When So & so said Boss told us we could do $100, what do you think happened? If you guessed "Boss denied it" you'd be correct. And So & so didn't save the text (I did, but I didn't like him, so I wasn't about to stick my nose in that mess to save him besides, that's just a slap on the wrist infraction anyway.) This boss I have now, is one of the nicest bosses I've ever had. I've literally had a boss who gathered the entire production floor together to show me a part. He'd wanted a similar part to be ordered (it was a bearing, we made pallet wrap machines and we were in the process of making a new design) and, in front of everyone, started mocking me and was acting as if the reason I hadn't ordered it yet was because I didn't know what a bearing was. I had to inform him that I'd been sending memos and making phone calls to everyone, including him, and even talking to the design team in person trying to get the exact specifications for the part. But because no one had drawn up official blueprints yet, so I couldn't get the information I needed to order the part. (Apparently, they were just winging it. It was a small mom and pop shop.)

@@donw4889No bc as the manager, if you have something on the agenda for a meeting then you should be prepared and making sure that you have everything prior to the meeting which would have been the manager reaching out to Veronica prior to the meeting asking if she had that presentation ready and if not then asked her to get it done before the meeting. The manager calling out Veronica in the meeting in front of everyone is disrespectful enough when she could have addressed it beforehand and if anything could have removed it from the agenda for today but will be part of next meeting or whatever. In this case she intentionally made the choice to call Veronica out in front of everyone but also tried to silence her every time she asked to share the screen showing that she knew what she was going to say/show. The problem is that not many ppl are willing to speak up for themselves for fear of retaliation and so managers like this are able to get away with this type of behavior. This type of behavior I’m sure also comes with harassing and bullying type of behavior too I’m sure and the employee could ultimately lose their job unjustly. This shows the managers inability to be an effective leader in which case she has no business managing people.

OK, first of all this manager should’ve never done that to her employee in front of other people. All she had to say was that the presentation for this meeting is not available at this time and I will reschedule the meeting. However, Veronica spoke up, saying she had a read receipt showing that it was sent and confirming that her manager opened it. What the manager should have said was …Great! Veronica are you comfortable with doing presentation? That way it would give Veronica the opportunity to say yes or no and if it’s no, then the meeting can be rescheduled Very disrespectful of that manager and she should be written up for that. That is why it’s always good to have your emails. Very poor leadership skills!!! She needs some serious leadership training.
