A live excerpt of Lobo's Versa Est in Luctum, performed at a previous concert in the Cotswolds, Tetbury! This piece, along with Lobo's Renaissance contemporaries, will appear on a programme later in the year 🏵
Alonso Lobo lived a more secluded life than many of his contemporaries, Tomás Luís de Victoria, for example. Apathetic to the royal pageantry of the courts, Lobo chose to live his life through the church, working at both Seville and Toledo Cathedrals, pictured in this video in their full splendour. One could assume, therefore, that Lobo was considered by other composers of the time as an outsider due to his reduced status in the eyes of the courts, perhaps encouraging his more chromatic, venturesome harmonic style. With this wall of sound, Lobo describes images of harps, organs and voices in mourning, an intense, passionate plea for mercy.
My harp is turned to grievingand my flute to the voice of those who weep. Spare me, O Lord, for my days are as nothing.
