I totally agree with you here. Sometimes it seems that developers create games in a vacuum (pun intended). Just to pick on starfield seeing as it’s the latest addition to the genre. Surely as a developer, you would play the shit out of the leading games in the genre to see what they do well and what they fail on. Elite and NMS are great for immersion, with the seamless transition between planets and space, but fail with the billions of star systems, creating a game universe that is an ocean wide but an inch deep. SC has the detail within ships, but not enough star systems and seems to suffer from a lack of direction by trying to be all things without strong narrative and lore to complete the package. Imagine starfield with a smaller selection of hand crafted systems, full planetary exploration without immersion breaking loading screens and the same procedurally generated buildings everywhere, vehicles, the current shipbuilding and outpost building, combined with the lore and story content.

Every now and then you have to meet with the pilot, talk to him and tell him to hand over his inventory to you. Now you can then sell the stuff. Alternatively, there is also an order later, that sends the ships to HQ, where they transfer their inventory to the station inventory in your office. I think you are underselling X4 by a long margin here. True, there's trading in X4, but that's the least of it really. The tagline of the X series is "Trade. Fight. Build. Think." and X is the only game of all that were mentioned where you can go from flying a tiny little scout ship, barely surviving repairing satellites and doing asteroid surveys, all the way to leading a gargantuan space empire with your own station complexes and fleets of ships, taking over sectors, toppling entire factions and even dominating the galaxy. Yes, you CAN go from "zero to hero" in X, in fact, the entire game is all about that journey. HOW you accomplish that is up to you. Yes, there's a fully simulated economy that reacts to supply and demand and your choices can and will influence how a sector or even a faction fares down the line. You can build a trade empire with fleets of mining and trading ships ferrying goods to and from your factory complexes across the sectors and win by sheer capitalism. You can raise a mercenary company and fight huge space battles, working for whoever you please (or pays the most). Or you can turn pirate, allying yourself with one of the pirate factions or making your own, taking whatever you please and living by your own rules. Or you can do ALL of those at once. There are also multiple storylines you can follow, with each expansion introducing a new one (or even several), where you can become a secret agent, a mercenary, a diplomat, a pirate or even all of those, taking part in events and stories that shape the universe around you and your choices have lasting consequences. Sure, the writing and acting is all over the place in terms of quality, but at least you can feel you are part of something more than just flying around blindly, trying to find something to do. I have thousands of hours in multiple X games, and they're some of the best games I've ever played....despite their shortcomings. Yes, EGOSOFT is a small studio, they don't have the manpower or the funding of giants like Bethesda, Frontier or CIG, but they have something these don't: heart. Sure, EGOSOFT's releases are always terrible, their games are DOA, terribly broken, neigh unplayable messes. It happens every time. BUT! They never gave up on a single one of their games. Yea, it usually takes years, but with the help of the community and modders they fix up the game to not only basically working but being some of the best sims out there. EGOSOFT is not the best studio out there, but they are persistent, tenacious, and they love what they do. Similarly, the X games are not the prettiest or easiest to get into, but once you get past the initial hurdles, the UI, the controls, it has quite a quaint charm with insanely deep game mechanics and tons of possibilities.

Well, Yamiks could only play so much of x4 so his view is understandable. Early game is indeed all about trading thanks to Egosoft decision to make enemies realisticly created instead of spawning them out of thin air like x3 did. So elite combat in its first hours is magnitude more enjoyable. The combat x4 can do like noone else is a medium to big fleet battles. Nothing feels like jumping into the sector with your carrier, ordering your bombers to perform a strike on the enemy capital to then PERSONALY jump into one of them snipe the capital's parts or fight other fighters. The sheer specticle of diving into AA fire with 50 other bombers is great. And no other game can do it. But it all comes after like 20-30 hours of economic grind with weak 1v1 fighter combat, which many players sadly wouldn't go through. Which is easily fixed by adding x3 like combat missions but devs dont want to do it.

You can literally play it almost like an grand strategy OR completly ditch that and play as a solo merc or smuggler. You can do quests and enjoy RPG aspects or focus on economy and other space-sim elements Not to mention huge amount of ships, walking on stations and ship interiors, space combat and so much more. This is true, but due to the fact that the game has such a huge level of simulation of the game world (the highest of all space games), at some stage of the game everything comes down to the CPU performance limit. The simulation is so cool that it definitely needs a client-server architecture to separate its processing from the gameplay processing.

I feel like you sort of under sold X4. It’s probably the most immersive space sim game out there with pretty much everything you’d want in a space sim game. The only few things holding it back are the graphics and maybe the mechanics can be a bit clunky at times. But honestly with the DLC’s and a few recent updates the game looks really good and for modern standards especially with some of the mods that are out that enhance the ship graphics. I can’t think of any other space sim game that gives you absolute control of the world you want to engage with. From being a miner, scrapper, trader, mercenary or just hiring an army of crew members to do all that for you all across the galaxy. Or being able to build, buy and own an entire armada of ships manned by crew members that you can interact with along with ship and station interiors. And an actual working in game economy that functions with or without you, but can be altered and affected by the choices made by you. It’s arguably the best out there and only slips under the radar because graphically it’s compared to other games in the genre and like I said before. It holds up graphically with the DLCs that add improves station and ships textures. I’ve yet to find a game that gives me all the things I ask for in a space game the way X4 does.

I have played all of them, though I didn't really get that far into X4 (I played X3 extensively). I still plan on doing X4 properly at some point, as you say, the X series is a hidden gem! I miss Eve Online in this comparison: It isn't first person, but trading, ship combat, mining, etc are there. It isn't really that much of a sim either, but nor are X4, NMS or Star Field. NMS did a fantastic come back (the biggest come back of any game ever I think), but it's style isn't hard core enough for me. For Star Field, fast travel made the galaxy feel tiny, space flight is close to non-existent and in the end loading screens killed it for me entirely. It is a Bethesda adventure, but it is just barely a space game. I used to play a lot of Elite Dangerous. Elite Dangerous is still unbeatable when it comes to space exploration, especially if you are a bit of a space nerd and interested in the star systems and all the weird (real!) astronomical features out there. Going across the galaxy is a huge undertaking and very satisfying, it really feels like an expedition! The game I ended up playing the most (the one I still play) is Star Citizen. For multi-player game play, Star Citizen is unbeatable. Yes, it is a buggy mess, but the amount of messing around you can do with friends in that very deep simulation is incredible! It is a fantastic sandbox to fool around with in a group. I agree that it is pay-to-skip, but that is nothing compared to pay-to-win. At least not if you mean pay-to-win in it's original meaning, which is in a PvP MMO. Balance isn't perfect, but you certainly can not beat someone more skilled than you by paying! Also, it is not in any way the pay-to-progress that some games have, where you need to wait for days to progress unless you pay. In Star Citizen it is quite easy to make in-game money and there is basically nothing that you can't get in-game. If you just play the game there isn't any reason at all to pay real money for anything in Star Citizen unless you like it so much that you donate to keep the game going. A surprising number of people do donate for that reason and this is the real reason why there are such expensive game packages. They are there because they want to give you a token reward when you donate and that means they need huge ship packages if someone feels like donating huge amounts.
@randlebrowne2048
10 ай бұрын
The only real reason to spend more real money to purchase a ship is to avoid the occasional server wipe. Once the game is officially "released" and server wipes become a thing of the past, even the perceived "need" to buy more than a cheap starting ship will disappear. I've accumulated a bit over $1,200 spent in the games so far. As an early backer, this is actually less money than I'd have spent in a subscription-based MMO over the same amount of time. Anytime I feel the urge to buy a newly released ship, I just recycle some of my previous ones for store credit.
@paul1979uk2000
10 ай бұрын
I remember when I backed Star Citizen around a decade ago, I spent around £50 on it, got 2 basic ship, I think it was 10,000 credits, Star Citizen and Squadron 42. I remember saying to myself that I didn't want to buy the more expensive bigger ships, not out of rewarding CIG but more out of that I wanted to start the games on the bones of my arse and build up with little to nothing, as I felt that would be far more rewarding than buying a lot of the bigger ships. But I've no problem with gamers spending a lot more to buy the expensive ships, the game needs funding in one form or another. Also, like you said, everything in game can be earned by just playing the game and as long as it's not excessive when it comes to grinding for them, I don't think most gamers will have anything to worry about and if I'm not mistaken, the funding model for Star Citizen after release is game sales and DLC contents, so Squadron 42 and future contents on that, everything else in Star Citizen MMO can be earned in game, unless anything has changed.

I don't agree with your view of X4 combat. You have: Several different ship classes (instead of S/M/L in Elite), carriers, resupply ships, bombers, different larger ship classes like frigates and destroyers, different RACIAL weapons with special abilities, you can target subsystems, you're able to board ships and you can play the game even as a fragile fighter pilot - using just a simple mod that teleports you to your closest owned ship when you're destroyed. You can salvage the destroyed bigger ships and you can even hack them. Oh and Engineering (modding) of ships is also possible! I long for a remake or a sequel to my all time favorite space sim: Freelancer. Freelancer nailed every checkmark for me that none of the games in this video were able to nail down. Sure they may have done better in one or more aspects, but never all of them at once. Freelancer had a simple yet wonderful control scheme, that made it easy to pick up and play but remain engaging even for veteran players, as each ship had different handling characteristics and weapon diversity allowed for interesting setups all the way to the end. The galaxy was massive not because it was procedurally generated or because there were a lot of stars (there wasn't, only 53 systems) but because everything was handcrafted. The bases, derelicts, even the lore and background story of both the galaxy and the individual factions. It displays the meaning of the difference between wide and shallow, and narrow and deep. It had beautiful design, from the effects of the weapons, to the actual shape of the ships, to the awe-inspiring starscape itself. Every star system, and I mean EVERY system, was beautiful, like flying inside a photo from Hubble or James Webb. And finally, it had a GOD-TIER sound design. The hum of the engines, the sound of weapon fire, the death screams of your enemies as you shoot them down... and the music. Out of everything, the music has stayed with me all these years. The modding community is keeping it alive, and I hear theres an effort to reverse engineer its source code. Microsoft has no idea what they're sitting on.

SC is my preference and I have two questions. One griefing in star citizen? after playing for 2+ years only once been lured into an unwanted confrontation. Two pay to skip when the two best fighters can be bought for around 1mil AUEC which equals not even a weeks' worth of play. for the most your synopsis is correct. This is still one of the best sources to see how space sims stack up and is still one of my first places to come before I check out a space game. TLDR: More casual and friendly gameplay that you can pickup and drop at any point, have fun with your friends or play by yourself = No Man's Sky You hate yourself, but want REALLY immersive ships = Elite Dangerous A game held together by bubblegum and microtransactions that can be really fun and immersive, but annoying to some people because it really isn't anywhere close to finished and who knows when will be (maybe one day the game will be as great as the ships it has) = Star Citizen Space trading sim: X4 You just hate yourself: Starfield

Once I get through a couple of other games I'll dive in. The one thing is, there's a huge Star Wars mod for the game and I'm kinda tempted to just install that. I really should just play the base game. But pulling into the landing bay on a Star Destroyer has always had massive appeal for me. In modded X4, you can pull into the landing bay on your own Star Destroyer and then fly it around. It's a hard proposition to pass on.

Coming from someone who grew up on Tie Fighter, X-Wing, Wing Commander and miss those days, I recently got back into the genre looking for that space combat feel with a little extra. I actually researched the hell out of every title mentioned (minus Starfield, wasnt' out yet) and settled on X4. I agree with the steep learning curve and UI but after I customized my controls, I was right at home. I didn't realize it but that little extra I was missing were fleet battles and control of ships larger than a fighter. Of all the games, X4 does this best with different classes, sizes, and purpose built ships with customization of function while also adding character to each one. I'll happily forgo the FPS stuff for compelling space combat with fleets anyday. If you haven't given X4 a chance, I highly recommend it. After you get the hang of the gameplay and economy, download the Star Wars mod! There's nothing like commanding a fleet of Star Destroyers.

actually enjoyed the video (as a star citizen fanboy, that is not allways the case :p ) . from those 5, so far played everything but elite (still salty about my partial refund after they announced no offline servers shortly berfore release, so i won't ever go there) and starfield (somewhere after skyrim i decided to wait some months after launch before buying any future bethesda title, and that saved me from f76, as well as starfield). - x4 i have to agree, is great for the trading gameplay, and since i played the series from the frist x game until now (only skipping x - stillbirth) it always held a place near to my heart ;) though with egosoft you are usually well advised to use bethesda rules, as their games are guite buggy and/or barebones at launch, though they get better over time ... -no mans sky i initially hated what they did at launch, but at the same time, it is a poster boy of what can happen in a redemption arc if the devs really mean it. nowadays i pop in every now and then and actually find it quite an enjoyable experience. - star citizen/sq42 being a backer since the crowdfunding started at first, i keep popping in every now and then to check progress.personally i am happy with what i see (and i love getting some rare view into a project under development that i wouldn't be privy to otherwise) but i wouldn't suggest everyone to buy in before it is released. yes, one can use the freeflight weeks that happen throughout the year to check the current state, but still, if one doesn't have an alpha tester mindset, i'd advise to play something else and come back closer to release.

The only one of these I haven't tried is X4, and I often think I should give it a go sometime. The one that surprised me the most was Star Citizen. After being burned by Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, I went in with a healthy dose of cynicism, and now I'm fully on board with it. I wouldn't call myself an evangelist - the manipulative and occasionally downright scummy practices of its marketing and monetisation really make me cringe, and I always tell people it's not worth buying _yet_ unless you're _really_ interested in trying it - but, given enough time, I honestly believe CIG's devs can deliver that amazing, immersive space sim I always wanted Elite to be, and contrary to what its many detractors might say, it's pretty clear to me how insanely difficult the task they've set themselves is, and how hard they're working to get it done. For what they're promising, I can wait. And if it goes belly-up before they can finish it... I've spent a grand total of about sixty Quid on it (I traded my Aurora for a Pisces), and I've already had an absolute blast during the time I've spent with it. A hell of a lot more fun than I had with Starfield, anyway. And with about the same amount of frustrating bugs (and a much larger number of hilarious ones).

The grind in ED is dull and makes it a repetitive experience. HOWEVER, the immersion beats all the other games by a mile and the first time you fly your Clipper into a high risk/high reward RES has not been beaten yet. Yes, really, I used the Clipper instead of the 'glorious' Python, on my first try. 🙈 I just bought X4 and will give it a good go, as I love Stellaris and the mixture of ED and the former sounds really good to me.

The main thing about Elite's controls is that there's a ton of them. I'm using a x56 HOTAS which has: 3 up down left right "joysticks", 2 analog joysticks, 7 two-wayed switches(each switch can have two different things controlled by clicking it forwards or backwards), 3 scroll wheels, main joystick(can also twist for yaw), main trigger, 3-4 bonus buttons, second lower trigger, and the throttle lever. All of that combines to a total of 12+2+14+3+6+1+4+1+1= 44 inputs at least. I went back and tried them all recently too. Elite Dangerous is still the only one that feels like a quality game throughout. The on foot combat is a bit 'retro rainbow six' but it's still functional and offers plenty of challenge. The space combat is second to none, in my opinion, and the imersion of the game through how it feels overall along with the sound design elevates it above the other offerings significantly. I feel that if it had anywhere near the available funds that Star Citizen has, we'd already have our premium, does everything space sim. Sadly we're stuck with 'It's probably the best of the current five' as Frontier are running out of money and will really struggle to build on it more... Tragic. If you feel an urge to purchase Star Citizen or any of it's vaporware ships, please instead make a huge donation to Frontire instead so they can afford to make the best space sim better.

A few things to clarify about Star Citizen: 1) It is an open-world multiplayer sandbox with a $45 buy-in. There is no publisher for the game, so almost all of the funding comes from ship sales and donations. 2) Seamless transition of 1st person character from buildings/hangars/ground to ship to space to planets across the system (no loading screens). 3) Mulitcrew ships with full interiors that can be walked around while in flight and often have turret gunner stations. (Note: Exiting a ship in transit will leave you floating in space.) 4) Factual correction: Disabling, boarding, and stealing ships has been in-game for a while, though you cannot permanently claim a stolen ship as your own. 5) New in 2023: Persistent Entity Streaming tech allows objects to remain on the server where you left them almost indefinitely, which enabled physicalized cargo crates that can be loaded/unloaded manually, including being stolen by player pirates. 6) On the horizon: Server-Meshing tech to stitch together multiple game servers in one universe instance with no loading screens and no visible boundaries between servers. Includes the ability to attack players/NPCs/vehicles across server boundaries.

Loving the genre, and owning all these games (and some others not mentioned here), I would say that X4 is the best of the bunch. Star Citizen would be stellar, if it existed as a finished product, but is a completely unoptimized mess of bugs and crashes at the moment. Elite Dangerous is the exploration game per excellence, but with nothing other than radiant quests and mechanisms, gets boring real fast. Starfield is good until the illusion breaks (basically when you realize that those pirate bases are repeated templates, or see alien temples next to colonies). And anyway, this is not a space simulator, the little sequence in space is not deserving of it, which is a shame considering building block by block your ship is cool. But X4? I love so much things about it. I love that this is truly a simulated universe at the faction level (the factions capability to build fleet depends on their economy), as well as at the station level, stations produce goods and work according to supply and demand, and all the traders out there are really hauling goods from station to station feeding this economy. The simulation is so good that the universe will change over time, sectors being taken over by a faction or another, and for example economic piracy is a valid strategy, against a competitor station, or even empire. I love that you can build your own stations, hence producing goods and creating an industrial empire; That all products are part of a long supply and demand chain which starts with minerals mined from asteroids, and ends with the building of ships and stations themselves. Hence you can literally by the end game have an economy with fleets of miners and haulers, and mass produce fighters and battleships. I love that you can not simply control your own ship, but that you can have wingmen/patrols/fleets, and that when entering war, you can just as much control your own battleship or fighter, or simply watch from the bridge of your capital ship, give orders and witness the firework. I love that you can conquer sectors and build your own empire (or get wrecked because you got cocky after aquiering a few battleships and believing yourself able to declare war on a faction). Basically, there is here a feeling of building up something and really impact the dynamic universe during your (long) playthrough that you don't find in other games where you are simply stuck in your small ship. Right now, after a playthrought where I had a mining operation, this time I am playing a mercenary, with at this point a little wing of 7 Peregrine gunboats, trying to help the Argon federation and their antigone allies to fend off a xenon invasion in the Hatikva Fate and Void sectors. Right now, I am refitting my ships so that we can go take down a xenon destroyer which has just destroyed the argon trading hub in the Void. BTW the shooter aspect is actually fun, particularly as it is often a combat involving a bunch of ships, and that I have to manage my wingmen on top of fighting myself (don't want to loose any of them, the pilots and overall crews of those ships are all starting to have good skills, and raising personnal skill level is a slow process).

Also loving the latest DLC's as well as well as the expedition mechanic. The game is full of content and purpose, also the story is weirdly interesting as undercooked as it is, definitely beats Starfield for me, mostly because of the immersiveness, music and much better writing, even if it's only text (XD) Goes to show how badly executed Starfield as a whole package is. The problem with Starfield for me is that it fucks immersiveness in the ass constantly which takes away from every part of the game especially the story, since a story can only be as good as its immersiveness for me at least.

Now days the monetization model that Star Citizen uses is the most sure way to have enough time to make a good game. Since most of the big studios are owned by big corporations that only understand dollar signs and just want to make more money fastest way possible. The dream of what the game hopefully will be in the future is way in the future. But people just live with the " I want everything now" mindset and don't seem to undestand something so simple. "Rome wasn't build in a day" . Corporations as funders of the game and also most of the gamers having brain rot and expecting a good game to be made in a year or two are the down fall of new large scale good games.

I have yet to see anyone who criticizes SC's funding model, offer any suggestion to a different way of doing it. And still keep the big corp's out of it. CIG has never required me to pay more than my $110 in 2013 to continue to play, the more than promised content I was originally supposed to get. Not sure if any other game has ever done that. And now its actually cheaper at $45. How many times, and how much more, was one required to pay, to continue to play ED's expansion for promised content? And is that original promise made 11 years ago, ever going to be released? Which of the two fundings models seems to work best to reach the promises?

It's amazing how much they added to NMS over the years, but it doesn't fix the "boring" aspect of the main gameplay loop, which is one of my big gripes with this game. Unlike Minecraft, which makes you forget that you're always doing the same thing thanks to clever level generation, NMS is just pretty much the same no matter where you go, and the upgrades don't make exploration better, only less annoying. I wish it had the game design of Subnautica, where you need better upgrades and tech to explore more dangerous regions to get better materials and upgrades, etc. In NMS you can quickly get the best warp drive and travel to any system, and they are not that different from each others.

Elite is just making me mad. Its set the genre back it doesn't do anything that hasn't already been done and what it does it does it badly. Example Star wars Galaxies and its space expansion JTL (which was made by SC people long before SC) is 20 years old, ED promised interiors for ships, SWG did that 20 years ago, and not only were they interiors that were large with exposed viewports they could be decorated with many items, the ships held 16+ people ONLINE, would sync all that decoration with those players, all while in combat with maybe another 100-200 people ONLINE. ED can't do what a game did 20 years before it. Not even gonna get started on engineering.....

I'm going to be honest with you don't support the x4 devs at all, they have constantly been ignoring the communities pleas for things that need to be fixed, a huge example is the combat ai is bad just horrible most of the time going face to face smashing the enemy ships or they may stay at range you never know, the trade AI is just as bad especially the manager screens and trade adjustments not working like they should, I've even had devs shout me down after providing proof of this evidence to them. Eventually you have to get involved in the RTS portion of the game cause in my 4k hours of gameplay the Xenon just win naturally without intervention greatly in the matter. So the devs ignore the communities problem reports a ton of them then just throw out another DLC with lame content, I will say the stories are good, but the ships just get worse and the AI gets even worse each time they update or release new DLC.

I have 420 hours in No Man's Sky (nice) and 130 in Starfield so far. I haven't tried the others, mainly because I'm not a huge fan of the space simulation side of things (trading, ship combat, etc). I love No Man's Sky because you get a cool sense of pride finding something nobody else ever will. The base building is also great, and the continuous free updates show that the developers actually care about the player base, and not just out to make a buck. I love Starfield for the story and dialogue, especially the companions. I also get lost for hours in the ship creator. I also agree with the FPS implementation; I like being able to go all out or stealth, kind of like Far Cry. Both games are vastly different and for that reason, I like them both.

I love X4, but damn I just can’t seem to get into it, lol. I like the idea of the game, and it clearly has A LOT of content, but every time I dive into the game, I get hemmed up on “what do I do?” Which is quickly followed by “how the hell do I do it?”

I always feel Starfield is way out of place in these kind of comparisons. In my mind something like Elite is more on par with Forza Horizon than with Starfield

Oh I remember looking at Elite and Star Citizen thinking Elite chose the more sensible approach and by the time SC will be released Elite will have added most of the features SC promises while being playable the whole time. But well Elite's mismanagment is now pretty sad to look at. Starfield is really just a criminally underdeveloped Bethesda game with space sim elements baked on top but it's just bad in all aspects. And NMS is kinda fun and relaxing but i consider it something like Crafting survival game with spaceships rather than space sim. And even tho they had all this redemption ark and all it feels to me like most of the features they added don't even support the main gameplay loop properly and are just some shiny stuff on top while only a few updates actually managed to improve the game in a meaningful way, it still has many pretty deep issues. I haven't played X4 tho.

If you do another Versus in the future, hopefully you include SpaceBourne 2.

You took the horse deep on this dive. 🐴 Great video, I appreciate the work and above all, it's nice to have an up to date comparison out there for those that enjoy space sims. Thank you so much 🙌

I played X3 back then when there wasn't anything else around (some underwater themed thing in the same time - can't remember which of the two I preferred) I bought 300r on star citizen as a good and fast alrounder in case that will ever finish and join the yearly tec checks and then I tried Elite Dangerous to ACTUALLY fly a ship Now I visited this video to find out if I want to give X4 or No Mans Sky a try. Bin since I got ED I can't accept ship handling a lot worse than that. I would be ok with trading focus of a more narrow but living world with single player trading. But the ship simulation need to be as good - so X4 is out. And I'm fine to lack a little of the gun game and focus more on exploration so I might give no mans sky a shot. Won't try starfield. I like the grown up looks but I can't stand the missing flying part and the mostly generic missions with irrelevant text. I enjoyed Skyrim but I also enjoyed the GTA Series, Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk SO MUCH MORE Story end random encounter wise. So nope to Starfield. I'm german and I gave the thumps up on hearing your german impression.

at this point Warframe railjack is one of the better space-combats i play other than infrequent runs ar i-war 2 or x-wing skirmish modes. (solo/co-op, avoid 3-4 man stacks at all costs as an NPC gunner & engineer are virtually mandatory, if a little too powerful at lower levels) NMS is almost as spin-to win as ED with an almost eequally nerfed console-first flight model. S -cam- C is basically unplayable for me alternating between 13 and 0.01 framerate X4 i have had on my wishlist a long time now and while planetside 2 isn not technically a space-game i still never got on with it's flight mechanics enough to play it more than as a jump-trooper for 20 minutes of reminding me why i don't play it more despite living in the original game as a spec-ops support/tanker/jetpack-MAX player in a spec-ops outfit. space-game wise? most recent i played and enjoyed was rebel galaxy, the 2d capital-ship zoomy and shooty one not the 3d half-assed space-trucker with an awful UI one.

It's Star Citizen for me. Even as buggy and broken as it is, it's the only space sim that scratches my itch.

X4 has reactive everything. Even story. While there are the chose A or B etc in it, 90% of the story goes by the game WATCHING you. You activelly have to play out what you would othervise be a cutscene in other games and the way you do those actions in the cutscene the game recognise the path you wanna take in the story. AAAAaand there is a lot of that, like an absulute accinide amount, like holy shit CRPG level amount of quests to completly lose yourself. Also you can use whatever you want in every quest, so if you park your big fuck off capital ship next to a pew pew q, yeah you gonna clean them out before the introduction is done. It can save absultelly everywhere so you can be really cute how much you wanna stack a deck against a mission. For me X:Rebirth was the best story driven game so far.

Anyone hoping that DB will keep to his word and release the files for public use and modification is very likely going to be disappointed, DB isn't known for keeping his word, and I'm not sure he even has the power anymore now that his ownership of FDev has been diluted so much. Recent news I have from an insider is that the share price of FDev has dropped 90% from it's previous high and redundancies are imminent - ANY hope of ED ever getting it's missing content like proper atmopheric planets is now ZERO. What ED is now is ALL IT WILL EVER BE. Yes it could be argued that ED scratched that space game itch for players at it was the first out the gate before NMS, and SC, but in all the time since that it's been in "development" it clearly hasn't been when compared to the rest. I doubt ED will ever have proper atmospheric planets like NMS, let alone flora and fauna. The entire 400 billion galaxy is going to full of pretty, but empty and barren rocks. FFS they haven't even done EARTH as at least ONE atmospheric planet with cities etc. Hell even just procgen cities with only specific landing ports just to fake a version of future Earth would have been nice, but not even that; after 9 years of development and "100 developers" working on it according to FDev; utter bollocks.

X4 wins... NMS is basically get boring after you collect 30+ almost identical ships, meet totally identical NPC aliens and outposts, reach the center of the galaxy and run the occasional missions from the anomaly. SC... Well... Its great but extremely buggy to be really focused on... SF enjoyable enough, but more content would be great. ED... After a short jump into SC, Going back to ED seems like a blessing, even with all its quirks.

I played No Man's Sky, Star Citizen, and Elite Dangerous. It has been a while since I played them, but I preferred Elite Dangerous over them. But Starfield looks like poo. When I play games, I play in 4k on a 55 inch oled. Elite looked the best.

I suppose it all depends on what you are looking for. Starfield is crap space physics with a paste and cut game engine that is over 20 years old. However, Bethesda hit their rpg marks, like they always do, making the rest of the garbage you have to deal with bearable. X4 and Elite Dangerous. Both games a space sims without compare. The immersion is almost complete, especially with VR in ED. X4 is better over all but without VR, it kind of stutters going against ED. No Mans Sky is still very bad, space wise. The fact that is has VR support helps it and the company has made tremendous strides to improve the game but it feels very empty and repetitive.

Nothing without native joystick support can be called a "space sim", that's just silly! You're still the only reviewer I trust though...

I liked NMS when it first came out. Yes it was kinda empty at the time but I also like Elite Dangerous and most of my time in that game is spent flying from Azeban Orbital to Leonard Nimoy Station and back.

If elite had a few dozen more ships and mods for exploring (on console), it would be heaven and I would never leave the house. I’m def NOT a pvp guy, never have been except for battlefield and war zone a bit. Just like I’d like my mech games to be slow and realistic that’s how I like my space sims. Focus on flying and slow realistic movements….not fast moving combat for kids.
