Verticillium in the Pistachio - IberoPistacho
Hello good afternoon. The person who speaks to you is Juan Gallego, Manager and Technician of IberoPistacho. Here, in my left hand I have a plant, as you can see, a green plant, it is a male, specifically Randy and the foot that bears, attention, is UCB. The UCB is a rootstock, is a hybrid and is the result of the crossing of two pure varieties such as Pistacea Atlántica and Pisacea Integerrima. The UCB can be achieved either by micropropagation, which is through multiplication in the laboratory or by seed, but the genetic component is exactly the same. Why do I start talking about this or this plant material? Well, because in this video I'm going to talk about Verticillium. Verticillium is a fungus that damages the pistachio. Better said, if there is a fungus that the pistachio has to fear is the Verticillium and for that reason now, I will explain to you in detail, how is this mushroom and how can you defend yourself before it, so that your plants, are always in the best conditions. And I advance you, prevention, the best way. In all the Mediterranean basin, the importance of Verticillium is high, being a very expanded disease and being in continuous propagation. The condition is increasing in recent years and this has contributed to the intensity of all the crops we are working on every day in all the fields and fields of Spain. The Verticillium is a fungus that lives in the soil, known for a long time and affecting crops, for example, such as cotton, sunflower, beet, alfalfa, olive, eggplant, potato, pepper, tomato, and so on. Woody crops are clearly expanding. I'm talking about the almond tree waiting for the olive tree and also the pistachio. And what happens? that when these woody crops begin to colonize lands where these crops have been mentioned before, we have the possibility that these lands have Verticillium and that the pistachio plants that we end up being affected. It should be noted that the current fungicides are not effective against this fungus. Therefore, the measures to be taken must always be preventive and healing rarely works. The symptoms, then look, I tell you, it appears in a single branch or in the root and always goes in the case of the branches, from top to bottom. It is called or is called slow decay. The first leaves attacked roll longitudinally, forming a kind of channel and then dry. The fruits and leaves that have been attacked and dried do not fall during the summer. It is what is called mummified, they stay there and then already, they end up falling. Once you have that plant. Also tell you that some stems acquire a purple hue and inside, they have a dark coloration. Now, acting method. We spoke before that prevention was, let's say, effective. As has already been said, there is no specific fungicide that is proven to work well when it comes to curing, therefore, it has to act in several ways. When we have Verticillium very ... very, let's say, expanded, very propagated. It is best to start the affected tree, including the root. In this way the expansion of the fungus is avoided. In the land occupied by the tree, the fungicide that is most appropriate is applied, once the tree has disappeared and solarization is also carried out, which is also a way to kill those fungi that have become more ... closer to the outside, to what is the surface part If we cover that part with a plastic and keep it in the summer, we will make those fungi die in their entirety.
