We also tow a heavy Aussie van in NZ. Used to have a Ranger (older type). Switched to a V8 Nissan Patrol. Would never go back - the Patrol is night and day a better tow machine - so long as you don't look at the fuel bill. All the tech, can't beat that big 5.6lt V8 for me :-)

Great choice Greg, We purchased the Everest sport 6 mths or so ago and love it as a two wagon, Can get a bit pitchy on some road surfaces although I've been told air bag over ride rectify this

Love the colour matching with the caravan. Luke is very jealous. We had one on order but had to cancel the order and finish the house 🤦🏼♀️

What about putting on clear view mirrors Guys

Not sure we need them at the moment the Jayco has a reasonable camera system and I’ve got it displayed on the ranger screen… but I do like the idea of extended mirrors… I’ll have to approach the war office. Cheers Greg

Hi Greg. We have been full time on the road (New Zealand) towing a Silverline Outback 21.65.3 (approx 3.2T) since we bought our V6 Ranger Wildtrak in October 2022. Another towing feature is the GCM increase to 6.4T which is the largest in category. We have done 25000 kms and about 14000K of that towing the Jayco. We blew a turbo at 1700 kms (bearing) and at the time we were the only one in the country to do this. We hadn’t towed anything at that stage. Ford really looked after us and had us back on the road in 3 weeks and gave us a loan 2lt Wildtrak for transport in the meantime (V6 is so much better). Towing economy (in Sync 4) is 16L per 100kms while towing the Jayco and average for the total 25000 Kms is 13L per 100km. Tow mode is great but I turn 4A off unless I’m on a road where it might be needed. I have never locked out 9th and 10th gear. I watch the trans temp and it has been fine. Great video for newbies and there is always something to learn for current owners. I still love my Ranger even though it gave me some grief at the beginning. Cheers.

@@blairmartin7984 I haven't done any real world tests to know for sure but it makes sense that it would be more economical. Some Aussies on a FB group I follow did some tests and found it made a difference. Cheers.

Hi Greg, assume you are running power from the vehicle battery to your caravan via a 50amp Anderson plug or similar - was it necessary to modify the smart alternator in the new Ford ?
@KiwiWanderers
4 күн бұрын
Yea I have 2 Anderson plugs one to batteries and 1 for the fridge. I got ford to turn off the smart alternator ( they did it for free) and it work’s great. I can get about 25amps into the batteries from the ute. Thanks for watching cheers Greg

You don't have the Trailer Backup assist system? That became an option on some trim levels in the 24.5 versions and standard on the Wildtrak and above. I have just picked up a 24.5 Ranger Wildtrak V6. The jury is still out on the choice.

@@KiwiWanderers I haven't setup the system yet. We have been on one trip and I just haven't had time to play with that. Hopefully this weekend coming I will go find a big open spot to set it up. I don't like that its much, much bigger than the old Rangers and the lack of both a large lazy diesel (the ultimate towing engine) and no manual, you will never ever convince me an auto is better for anything other than laziness. However some of that tech will be useful but not a fan of too many driver aids it dumbs you down as a driver.
@DW-10
Ай бұрын
Not a fan of allot of "proactive" driver aids but the Rangers aids are not intrusive and relatively well implemented (you can't really tell if they are operating or not). Easy enough to tuen the lane departure and autonstart/stop off. Tow mode makes a big difference to trans behaviour. Greg, what sort of temp does your trans sit at when towing. Mine seems to sit in the low-mid 90's according to my scangauge2. Would be great to get another point of reference.
@KiwiWanderers

Yea we get mid 90’s haven’t done many serious hills yet though I see they make a cooler kit for these vehicles but I don’t think I will need it.

@@KiwiWanderers the factory trans coolers are apparently 80% efficient, fitting extra coolers does not make a huge difference.
@DW-10
Ай бұрын
@@gdog1443 80% efficient to what reference point? The factory coolers are heat exchangers transferring heat to the engine coolant. That means the trans can't really get much cooler than engine coolant temps. We see mod 90's temps too. Same with engine coolant temps. In our old ute with a front mounted radiator, temps sat in the 75-85C range most of the time. Mid 90's is ok as far as I am aware ( from a oil longevity perspective) and the Ranger does an impressive job of maintaining a stable temp without allot of temp cycling hot/cold.
