So you guys what's interesting is the footage at the very beginning where they're showing them bomb and Godzilla that is actually test footage from the real nuke tests and you can actually find Testaments and the interviews from soldiers that were there on those boats those days and they talked about how that they could hold their hand up to that flash and see their skeleton and veins and muscle through their arms and a lot of them actually die from cancer of different sorts and of different diseases related those tests

The original Godzilla from 1954 (Gojira) showed relatively little of the monster as well, and this movie was paying homage to that notion. But folks weren't too keen on that one way or another. And essentially absolutely everyone was in unanimous agreement that Bryan Cranston was amazing, and killing him off was such a mis-step (which really is a credit to his performance, because plot wise I get the death). One thing that hit hard though without fail... when big green lets out that roar, holy hell can you feel it in your bones. And people straight up cheered at the end when he let out that signature atomic blast.

It makes sense to tease Godzilla in that movie cause A) he wasn't fighting another monster B) he hasn't been seen before C) the human characters were more interesting D) Godzilla was still the focus It doesn't work in this movie cause we expect him to fight the mutos and win but we keep focusing on Ford trying to get back to his boring family and constantly cutting away from the action I'm not surprised that a lot of audience felt teased by this movie

I thought the movie nailed the mood, thanks in large part to Cranston selling it, but it lost focus later on, and when we lost Cranston, we lost the only compelling character. Me too, but someone else compated it to the original '54, where it was the same, but also not. '54 everything nearly everything happens because of Godzilla. @@Necroven In the sense we didn't see as much of Godzilla it still felt more like a true Japanese Godzilla film than not. We got the human side and got the protector of nature's balance Godzilla which blended perfectly together in my opinion. With Godzilla not being the villain they had to focus on another kaiju and the Mutos were great for that role. Not seeing them fully for the most part until the end made the human side seem more relevant, just as it should be in a classic Godzilla (talking about classic like the 1954, 1984, and 2016 type of) movie. The powering up of his atomic breath was executed so well. It felt like we weren't getting a true Godzilla but then the shivers I got as the blue light appeared and started humming. I felt that scene was more powerful precisely due to the lack of Kaiju screen-time. I love big fight kaiju movies but Legendary went the right way in honoring the Godzilla franchise which was sorely needed after the movie Emmerich directed which showed his total disrespect of all things Godzilla (he wanted to do a Jurassic Park movie so butchered Godzilla).

@@oz78 i agree on every point. Still human cast except Bryan Cranston, was just... whatever for me. The only thing i didn't like about that movie is that too much on the Mutos. And i disagree, that just because Godzilla is a more neutral, balancing Power, doesnt mean, there is nothing to discover, nothing so sort out, nothing to discuss, they even tried to bomb Godzilla, when he was discoverd and are now looking for him. We kinda start with the premise, that he isnt evil... and why not let us discover that in the movie first, so mankind has to figure out first, which is the right side, if there is any in such a conflict between these Titans?

I remember seeing this is theaters when it first came out. Alot of people were excited, but we were also very hesitant because for alot of us including me our first exposure to Godzilla was the crappy remake by Roland Emmerich so we wanted to see Godzilla done correctly. The main Complaints going out of this film were that Bryan Cranston's character should've been the main character and not be killed off,and Godzilla wasn't in it enough but the bits he was there were amazing. The biggest Cheer in the Audience I was in was when Godzilla Shot the Radioactive Breath directly into the Creatures mouth....the Audience was dead silence except for a single dude yelling "YESSSS!!!!" And then the Crowd exploded in Cheers as Godzilla roared, showcasing his Title as the 1 true King of the Monsters

FWIW, *most* GODZILLA films don't actually feature all that much of our favorite kaiju -- Godzilla films are really about the world and the people in it, and how we interact with that. Godzilla is merely a catalyst for those human stories and more of a metaphor than anything. This film is very much in keeping with that ethos. That said...patience. Remember JAWS? ;)

Jaws had more compelling characters to keep the audience invested, and in addition, once they actually show Jaws himself, they don't really try to continue hiding him because there's no point in keeping him as this unseen force when he's already been seen by the audience. It's very much an homage to the first Godzilla film where he wasn't really in it a lot. Godzilla has always been a stand in for whatever boogeyman humanity has created for itself. In the early days that was nuclear war/energy and the threat it posed. It wasn't very long after the bit Japan quake and nuclear plant disaster that Shin Godzilla came out and the people of Japan absolutely understood the ideas and themes behind it. Godzilla went from representing the threat to humanity that we ourselves created to becoming the monster that protected us from others. Well, sort of, he protects the balance of nature as Sherizawa explains it in this film. He's not really on our side. he would just as quickly destroy us. It's what makes him such a fun character. Humanity does stupid things all the time and nature as well has things come up that shouldn't. The godzilla and Kong movies going forward get better, become much more modern films rather than an homage to the past. You'll get a lot more of the monsters and Godzilla himself.

Godzilla is pure childhood nostalgia for me. It's Saturday afternoons spent watching a line-up of these films on WPIX channel 11 on the floor of my bedroom with my head/chin cupped in my hands. This version felt like the most serious and sincere take on the story since the original movies...which were kind of campy and slightly on the edge of comical....despite the serious commentary on the horrors of nuclear war. For some reason moviemakers haven't taken on this particular tale very often. Stacked with acting heavyweights including Brian Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as well as Sally Hawkins and David Strathairn. While it had its faults, I think it went long way towards re-establishing the "character" of Godzilla and retelling his history for the modern audiences. He isn't just a monster of our own creation, in a way he's a protector....if we would only get out of HIS way. Should you choose to continue this journey, the next one up will be Kong:Skull Island. Another great cast (Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston, John Goodman and John C. Reilly )...and more nostalgia for me. LOL! You might enjoy that one better. I feel like they cracked the storytelling and didn't have to deal so much with set up and reintroducing the narrative. There's also much more visible action for you. And as someone below mentioned.....be sure to stay for the after credit scene.

Godzilla is such an iconic character in Japan and even the TOHO Cinemas in Shinjuku has a 'life size' statue attached to the outside (it is pretty cool and a highlight for me whenever I do head over that way for my theater experience). The director and co-screenwriter of the original Godzilla film was actually a prisoner of war during WWII and originally Godzilla was a symbol of nuclear warfare and how catastrophic it is, especially so considering the memories of war were still fresh in the minds of the audience. I felt this film was a good homage to the original in terms of tone and legacy (I studied Godzilla and /some/ of the subsequent films in my Japanese film studies class) Also, Ken Watanabe's last name is pronounced "wah-tah-nah-bay"

I think that the amount of Godzilla we get in this movie is actually just the right amount. For the first movie of what you're hoping to be a franchise, I think going with less works out. You don't overload the audience with too much of him. I think it's justified because of how much he's seen in the finale. When they need to go all out, they do and the final fight is good and prolonged and has lots of great, big moments. Also, the first appearance of Godzilla is maybe the most perfect monster reveal ever, at least top 3.

(Around 38:09) Something they don't mention in the movie is the Mutos evolved that EMP Ability to completely negate the "Zilla Race's" Atomic Breath removing one of their main offensive capabilities which is how the Mutos nearly drove the race to extinction, however Godzilla is strong enough that it reduced the negation to just a weakening which explains why in this move it looks like a Flamethower as opposed to the later movies' Focused Beam version.

So what drove the Mutos to extinction? Godzilla? I mean there's only 4 onscreen that we can see the other 1 is in a comic prior to 2014s events other 2 are here and other 1 in KOTM also I'm kinda late to reply lol

@amyguillen1831 The same thing that happened with all the others, diminishing levels of easily accessible radiation, which killed most of their main prey, which they were optimized to kill, leading to the slow extinction of their species.

This movie wasn't meant to be a monster spectacle. It was a reinterduction of Godzilla to a modern audience. Now if you want action then the next 3 movies will satisfy 👍🏻

King of the Monsters makes up for everything this movie lacks and is my favorite Godzilla film to date. And that's coming from someone who grew up with the old films! Shin Godzilla is my second favorite. Would love to see you guys react to both of those films. They approach Godzilla in very different ways and the tones of those movies are almost opposite of each other. KOTM is epic and big monster fights and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Shin Godzilla is terrifying and somber and keeps you holding your breath. I'd recommend those two movies above other modern Godzilla films.

The opening segment was from the Atomic bomb tests of the Bikini atoll and Enewetok Islands. part of Operation Hardtack in 1958. My father was a Naval Aviator and had to fly a shielded aircraft around the fallout cloud to measure radioactive waves from the blast

It probably didn't click because it was meant for people that were long time godzilla fans. America really let us down in 99 when they released godzilla, the zilla varient, as it just wasn't godzilla with America trying to americanize it so Godzilla 2014 felt like an apology to long standing godzilla fans and a way to draw them into the monsterverse. I loved this movie and the jaws esq approach they took. It made godzilla feel foreboding and like an unstoppable force of nature and it really hammered in the scale of the monsters and the helplessness that people would feel if these creatures attacked. It really gave the feeling of early godzilla movies with a bit of a modern day American spin to it

Well, the beginning of this Movie is showing actual Footage of the Nuclear Testing the US did between 1946 and 1958 at the Bikini Atolls in the Marshall Islands and they even shown the "Wilson cloud" from test Baker, It's brilliant to intertwine these with the Story of Godzilla.

Even though Godzilla has a very limited screen time, I really love this film. This is the only hollywood version that took the concept seriously where Godzilla was a force instead of an entertaining figure. And when you do se shim in action, he is absolutely glorious. And without this movie, we would not be a Godzilla that spits atomic ray from his mouth that sounds so cool. So we all have to give the credit where it's due.

The biggest error that a monster movie can make is showing the star too much before the third act. When you do, the monster loses it's ability to awe and amaze. As they did here, they introduced us and tried to connect us to the humans in the first act, while showing us glimses of the antagonist monster. Only in the third act do we really see the Big G in his glory. You see the same formula in the original movie, which I do recommend you watch if you can keep in mind that it's production and special effects are artifacts of their age. The second biggest mistake is making the monster funny- that's why the 70s, cartoony Godzilla movies are so meh to me. (And Toothless' spine glow in HTTYD is in honor of Godzilla) There were a lot of technical errors, though. So many technical errors. For example, the only thing stored at Yucca Mountain is the paperwork about the lawsuits that have ensured it will never store radioactives. And if you're not concerned about retiring, rendering a nuke unable to fiss is EASY- any EOD tech with a pair of demo blocks can do it a couple minutes. Or, ones you're down to the physics package, just take a hammer to it.

Fun fact, goji’s signature atomic breath is weaker in this movie because of the muto’s EMP like biology messing with him. They evolved to combat everything a Godzilla could throw at them.

After watching the reaction, I agree a lot with your reaction. Yes the audio and environment would be better in theatre. I am a big audio nerd and its my favorite part of the movies here. I get the whole idea to tease the Godzilla appearance. It works a bit, but we could of gotten more of him and be happier. Cranston SO should of been main character or at least been thru out the whole movie. I completely believe they did better with the second movie and Kong movies. But I still enjoyed this one a lot. Great reaction guys!

In the sense we didn't see as much of Godzilla it still felt more like a true Japanese Godzilla film than not.

If you haven't seen the original Gojira (Godzilla) then you probably missed concepts that run back to the beginning. I adore the original film, and encourage anyone to watch it. Films such as Gojira, Them!, Forbidden Planet, The Day The Earth Stood Still, all are amazing 1950's SF genre movies.

I feel the same about those nit picks but the good thing is that for kong, king of the monsters and Godzilla vs Kong they took that in count so for the next ones you'll gonna see the big a** lizzard a lot and the fights got a lot better 😄😄 And just to clarify, the mutos (bad monsters) aren't mothra, you'll see her in later movies tho. Hope you can see Kong Before KOTM and GvsK

I’m not sure if you guys know this, but the giant rib cage at the start of the movie belongs to Dagon. Dagon was Godzilla’s father and was killed by a MUTO which laid its eggs in Dagon which are also shown in the same clip. One of the eggs was said to have hatched and left, while the other was dormant and was taken to the Monarch facility. That MUTO that killed Dagon was the mother of the 2 MUTOs shown in the movie.

Fun to see your reaction to the fire/nuclear breath! Overall I agree with your answers...not a great plot, but the basic premise was there and the action was pretty good. Please watch CLOVERFIELD next!😄 Juliette Binoche - the wife who dies - is an excellent actress in her own right. She was in THE ENGLISH PATIENT with Ralph Fiennes (aka Voldemort). She is also in CHOCOLAT... That whole MUTA thing reminds me of the ROUSes (Rhodents Of Unusual Size) in The Princess Bride.
