When it comes to Dr. Bliss referring to Helga's experience as "not being noticed" as opposed to being "neglected" or "abuse", I have an of idea of why that happened. This was Helga's very first therapy appointment with Dr. Bliss, as well as very first therapy appointment ever. This would be an appointment known as an intake appointment, meant to find the baseline of the patient and figure out what all needs to be focused on. These types of appointments also focus on making sure the patient is comfortable, so referring to experiences as "neglect" or "abuse" tend to be avoided. Or, well, in all the intakes I've had with mental health professionals they were avoided, and were avoided being mentioned by any mental health professional until I was the one who brought up in my mid-20s that I was starting to think my father had been emotionally abusive to me growing up. This led to a long conversation that ended with yes, he was emotionally abusive, and that I had a lot of traumatic experiences not only with him but in various parts in my life, leading to a PTSD diagnosis. You also mentioned in the video wondering why Dr. Bliss didn't call CPS. I think there's a decent chance that she did, in fact, call CPS, if the location the show takes place in is anything like where I live, and multiple calls have to be made about a situation to get someone to check on it. Depending on how many times calls had been made about Helga's situation previously, there just still might not be enough to get anyone to do anything.

I think the reason Helga became a bully was to avoid being bullied. Her family hurt her. The kids at school hurt her. She doesn't seem to know love which is probably why she never told Arnold her feelings because honestly had Helga not been a bully Arnold may have liked her back. But she instead chooses to push people away by bullying. Basically an I'm gonna hurt you before you hurt me type thing. Because in reality Helga had no reason to bully Arnold. She already made the other kids scared of her so I doubt they would have cared about her crush after she did all that. But she's scared of rejection and being hurt.

It was so before it's time. Just such a great show to grow up with. All the deep sometimes dark, but very real topics that it was able to cover and the way it was relatable to kids and even adults too.

I don't feel like Olga is called out enough, especially as a much older sibling. I cannot imagine how much she was affected being the favorite child, but I cannot stand how much she sobs the way she does when she doesn't get her way. Nor can I get behind the way she blames Helga for the rift in their relationship. She needs to do more to show Helga how much she appreciates her, and understand when Helga isn't immediately receptive, especially as a young adult.

Another great video as always. My only thing and this is just my opinion I never saw Helga as the villain of Hey Arnold per-say. She's a deeply complex character in my eyes even through she bullies him and almost everyone else.

Question for your cartoon Q&A: How did you feel about the ending of As Told By Ginger? Spoiler wanting just in case anyone's reading who doesn't want to know **** I felt the last scene was totally rushed. At the wedding she's ready to move on from Darren, then in the flashforward she's married to him with kids. It felt like really lazy "don't worry, they get back together eventually" fan service to the people who still shipped them. It would have been better if no partner was there, then people could decide for themselves who'd put that ring on her. Also, she's still friends with Dodie. Unacceptable 😅

This video is a month old, but have you seen the movie yet? Both movies, now that I think about it. "Save the Neighborhood" and "The Jungle Movie". After the first movie, there's no way that Arnold does not know that she likes him, she literally confessed to him in the heat of the moment (poor Arnold nearly had a heart attack), but then they both kinda pretend it never happened. I haven't seen The Jungle movie in a hot minute, but since they do finally end up together at the end, I think they did talk it out. The shows creator wanted to expand on Helga with a new series where they're older, either starting high school or on the last year of middle school, called "The Patakis", but unfortunately Nickelodeon said no. He does talk about it a bit on his Instagram, even shared some concepts. It had the potential of being a great show. Other episodes where Helga shows her true sweet nature are the Christmas and the Thanksgiving specials. Particularly the Thanksgiving one. I believe the Thanksgiving one is post first movie, because of how Arnold behaves around her, but that's just me.

Get ready for a long rant on Helga and her family and on how she is First, she gets her anger/personality from her dad Big Bob, who between her and Miriam, I think, is the worst of the parents. He verbally and possibly even physically abuses his family (And he treats Miriam like crap). I think Big Bob may have alcohol issues himself, not like Miriam, more like a beer after work guy. It all caught up to him in one episode where he had a "Heart attack" where he thought he died and realized he was a monster. He tried changing his ways by being nice and living a somewhat hippy like lifestyle, but then at the end decided he was gonna work six days a week and grow a garden. You'd think he would've learned his lesson. Wrong, come Jungle Movie, beeper empire is falling through the ground since he refuses to accept that barely anyone uses beepers, and before they leave for the cruise he shoves Helga out of the way to tell Olga to be safe, and then drop a bag of beepers on her. That's physical abuse. He lashed out at Helga at a parents day event because she messed up in the egg toss and then yelled at her calling Arnold a "Orphan boy." Yes, Bob has actually tried in the past to be a good dad to Helga like helping her prepare for the Spelling Bee, but honestly most of the time he's a jerk. Now Miriam: Despite her alcoholism, she doesn't verbally abuse people like Bob does. I think a big reason for her drinking issues is the way Bob treats her. I also think Miriam is very oblivious to Bob's abuse, like it's no big deal. In past episodes, Miriam revealed how she had been an Olympic class and a good horse rider. But she revealed she dropped out of college to marry Big Bob. When she took over the Beeper Empire, she told Helga being at the office had made her a whole new person and that she hadn't be so happy in years. Yes, she ended up being a workaholic but at least she ad sobered up. When Helga got amnesia and woke up the next morning, Miriam actually came in Helga's room and asked how she was feeling and then filled her in on the whole amnesia situation. Bob would've kicked Arnold's ass if he had got home before Miriam the day Arnold walked her home and took care of her. workaholic. She's probably had thoughts of leaving him but needed to factor in where would she live if she didn't get the house, what would she do for income, and how it would affect Helga and Olga.

I'd love to see more eps on Helga bc there's so much to unwrap with her. Also for a Q&A mine is on penny's friends on the proud family. I not go ask about the whole "penny has fake friends" thing but do you think they should have had more character eps for them? I feel like they get 1-2 eps for them and normally it's their best ep. Like dijonay ep showed she wasn't just a bad friend to Penny, or just obsessed with sticky, she was good at poety and revealed how she felt being in a huge family when she did her poetry, which was great bc whe got to actually know something about her that we didn't know. Lacienica having big feet was great bc we saw a vulnerable side of her and between the interaction with her and Oscar and her overcoming that vulnerability, I actually was rooting for her in that ep. Zoey from what I see didn't really have a ep for herself but the closest was her feeling ignored but became more of a Oscar and suga momma ep. Point is I feel like we don't really get to know her friends and the fake ness I'd mainly what we see . Penny's flaws can be easily forgiven bc how much character development she gets but

Not an Imai video if you don't mention Dodie being a bad friend lmao. I agree that Helga doesn't qualify as a bad friend and she's not a bad friend to Phoebe anyway. Imbalanced dynamic, but never an outright bad friend. But honestly Helga might be the most interesting character of any kid's tv show.

Is it just me or is Helga's childhood similar to Vanessa's from Bernie Mac? Like Helga, Vanessa was raised by a neglectful mother. However unlike Helga, Vanessa pretty much had to raise her younger siblings and never had the chance to be a normal kid.

Oddly enough, Vanessa(at least in the show) never called her mom, Stacy, by her first name like Helga does to Miriam(though she calls her "mom" slightly more often than she calls Bob "dad") despite Stacy being a worse mom than Miriam because she made Vanessa partially responsible for raising her siblings.
