Can you make another video with your personal hunting setup? Each piece of equipment you use, and why you selected them? You seem extremely knowledgeable on the subject and I think it would benefit everyone looking at the DIY option while still being very practical and user friendly.

Yes I have been meaning to do that soon. It may be a few weeks because I am really busy with work and school and buying a house at the moment.

I reckon the utility bridge design eliminates the need for the extra short bridge , climbing down with gaffs dont bother me ,nor does taking gaffs off an putting them on but I am really leaning to this and idk why it's more stuff to pack in lol but my mind is trying to justify it .,crazy

Wouldn't it be much safer to use a climbing rated carabiner on your prusik?
@danchomycia903

Yes it should also be a locking style carabineer. As far as his rope if it's just a tree stand and it's 2 or less stories the fall probably won't kill someone but should probably learn how to tie it off and practice ways to get themselves unstuck.

Really like your videos bossman! Is 9mm safe for SRT saddle hunting?? I've started to get a collection of stuff together for a DIY kit (have the grigri+ and have a CT Rock Ascender coming soon). Now I'm looking at getting the rope. A friend said 9mm is awesome for SRT because it is lighter and more compactable than 10.5mm. My other question is does color matter? That lime green would surely stick out to a human I would think but not sure if it matters a how bunch for deer. Last last question, what's a good all around length of rope and should I get a spliced/sewn eye for one end and where to buy good rope?? As you can see lots of questions for one piece of gear.

Donovan Stockton I have a Petzl 9.1 (orange) & a Black Diamond 9.4 (green). I use them for SRT, they are great with GRIGRI+ , Petzl Stop, ATC, Totem, 8s & rescue 8s. Mine are 70m each and are NOT a pain in the ass to haul in on long hikes. Technology as come a long way, ropes don’t need to be 13mm anymore, I find 9mm to be the way to go.

A H Hey what carabiner should I get for my grigri plus? Petzl recommends a freino, but i dont see many guys using them.

I hear that with the safeguard it’s safe to be used as a fall restraint (as opposed to tree tether/Prussic). Can that ATC setup be used the same way?

I wouldn’t trust a fall on a safeguard. Great piece of gear but falls apply a lot of stress to gear. I hang from a hitch cord. I just use the metal stuff for descending.

@@overwatchoutdoors910 If that's your reasoning, why do you trust a fall on an unrated carabiner, not suitable for climbing, used as a backup.

@@jimste5898 I’m not using a cheap carabiner on my autoblock, it’s a hammock carabiner that’s rated for far more than the pressure on an autoblock. But I agree I should probably use a climbing biner for that too

Do you ever run the WE steps to climb and then when you want to come down girth hitch a line and repel down? I’ve started doing that bc I’ve noticed when I get in the tree in the early morning when it’s cold those WE ropes are tight but when I come out of the tree if it’s warmed up sometimes the steps are loose. Plus I think it’s easier to just sit in the saddle and pack the WE steps than it is to stand on one. Then all you do is pull the line down w paracord like normal.

Since you have been using this system for a while, what have you settled on for the perfect length of rope? I'm guessing that you need a length of rope that is a few feet longer than 2 times the height at which you plan to hunt. Or do you use a length of rope that is just slightly longer than the height you hunt? In August I ordered a 9mm HPT "prime short" from Sterling - well they were out of 9mm prime shorts, so they asked if they could substitute 11mm HPT rope. The 11 mm rope seems to be very slow through my Sterling ATS device (not a bad thing for the first few rapells). It also takes up a lot of room in the backpack. But, it got me rappelling again - so it wasn't all bad. Now I'm looking to lighten my load.

I use 50 feet of rope. It doesnt have to be exactly twice the height of where you hunt. Mainly just has to be long enough to touch the ground when you're rappelling from that height
