We broke in another new engine on the start stand yesterday. Pretty much a stock build with the Melling MTA-1 (Rebel Machine and 401) cam, electronic ignition. This build will be a nice driver with lots of low and mid range torque from with a balanced and blueprinted fully forged rotating assembly. The lifter bores were too loose so we bushed them in house. It takes roughly 30 minutes each lifter to drill out the lifter bores and then press in and then ream the lifter bores to the have the minimum clearance spec for the lifters. All the engines we bush the lifter bores always have great oil pressure and this one has over 20lbs at 200 degree hot idle (the temp gauge in the video died during the break in). Interestingly, this build had a strange situation during assembly when one of the new .030 over Wiseco forged pistons with heftier wrist pin boss contacted a lobe on the crankshaft. It turns out that the factory neglected to put a smooth finish on the lobe next to that cylinder resulting in the new bigger piston contracting the unfinished lobe. We ground the rough area smooth, had the machine shop do a quick rebalance (we had removed 15 grams) and all was good to go. As is the case with all of our engine break-ins with the smallish 600 Holley carb, this one also has great throttle response.
