Totally fair assessment, and to your point exactly the reasons you don’t like it is why I was pleasantly surprised. I love the idea of grungy looks but as soon as I put them on my eyes I feel like a foolish poser, as I don’t even wear black and feel dark colors around my eyes make me look tired and angry. I think these shadows just aren’t formulated to be applied with a finger. It seems like the oils on the finger cling to a lot of the pigments and both hold on tighter to the shadow than your eyelids do and also contribute to the hard pan. I wonder if one of those sponge applicators (like the little cheap ones that come in some drugstore and luxury shadow products) would work best for packing on those bronze shadows.
@julianashift

I have the palette and I just use a synthetic brush. That way it works beautifully, but I kind have to “scratch” the shadow with its bristles to really transfer the pigment. The black shaddow is awfaul though.

I was wondering that the whole time too. I can completely understand her feelings on her experience but I kept thinking the finger method might be making it worse.... Which usually isn't the case, the fingertip method definitely helps get more pigment and product with most eye shadows, but here it definitely seemed to be making the problem worse and I was wondering how a stiff brush would do.

I originally fell in love with the concept and color story but from seeing up-close swatches on YT, I could see that only a couple of the shades were special. And I'm not paying over $100, or even over $50 - for only 2 or 3 really quality shadows. And the rest are things I can find in Colourpop shadows. Thank you for your GENUINE review. This is actually my favorite palette, far surpassing my previous favorite by natasha denona. The colors are each quite special, and nothing like any others in my eyeshadow collection. I liked this palette so much that I did a massive decluttering, and this was one of *two* palettes I kept. The formula is soft and creamy, and superbly easy to blend. They are so pigmented I find using a little goes a long way. The texture and payoff is absolutely nothing like anything I’ve purchased from Colorpop, but then again I never have been impressed with anything from Colopop, unfortunately enough. I bought Isamayas entire first makeup release, and everything else was okay, nothing special, except this eye shadow palette. I am planning on purchasing her new eyeshadow palette as well, along with all three of her lipsticks. I also recently bought two eyeshadow palettes from Lisa Eldridge, so we shall see how those compare to Isamayas.

In defense of the Isamaya eyeshadow palette, this is my personal take… I feel like this palette is not just grunge in it’s color story, but also sort of grunge/punk in its emotional sensibility, where vibe trumps perfection if that makes sense? I have been really inspired by it. Perfect for fall/winter where I live (Seattle). Two thoughts on application: try wetting your finger before picking up the colors, that really works… and also I find the two dark colors that are more grease~like textures are not great stand-alones but better as a base for the other colors.

This is the review I was waiting for!! This whole collection has been on my radar since the promos dropped. The aesthetic is overt but I like it overall but I was definitely skeptical about the quality. I’m glad I decided to wait because for the price point of the items, I have a certain level of expectation in terms of performance - I don’t want to fight for the bare minimum. I think this would be a great “duping the vibes” deep dive, I’m thinking specifically about some of the Phytosurgence cream shadows that have the same tones but with better performance.

I have both of them a they're actually really different. The ELF one kinda cools down and adds a gray tone to the lips, it's a lot sheerer so it never really appears black. The way the ELF gloss looks on me (I'm light medium) actually reminds me more of how the taupe Trixie gloss looks Hannah. The Isamaya gloss is black on impact and then sheers out so it has more of a deepening effect than the ELF one. It's wild how much of a range black glosses could have. I have 3 in rotation now.

I was having the exact same experience with the Byredo 5 pan eyeshadow palettes released when Isamaya was creative director for the brand (or something like that). Although I adore the colours as they look in the pan, it is a very unfulfilling experience to actually use the shadows, they won't get picked up by either brush or fingers, I get a hard pan and so on, exactly as you described. Oh no ☹ I feel for your disappointment. I've only recently developed an interest in the pallet after rewatching some of Isamaya's videos. I had watched them a while ago just as tutorials, but it somehow didn't register that she was an artist with a unique point of view. But just yesterday I watched her video introducing the line, and I did actually think of you as she was describing the shades. Seems to me it really comes down to user experience (not just how experienced the user is, but the user's experience with the product) that determines whether someone loves or hates it. Judging by how Isamaya demoed the pallet, it seems that most of the shadows were NOT intended to be used with a finger, which is the exact opposite of pretty much every other shimmer/glitter formula ever. Actually, I just rewatched that video and noticed something interesting: except for one shadow, the black, the act of swatching was cut out; the video just cut to the swatch on her arm. In her video, she only mentioned using a finger with a few of the shadows, and when she applied them on herself, she used a brush. And a few of the shades, probably the ones you'd be most interested in, she specifically described as "very sheer" and 'light' and 'a wash of color'. So you're right that while the color might be your aesthetic, the formula and application are definitely not.

This FASCINATING!!! Save the gloss - which is bonkers amaze balls - I've had the exact opposite experience. This is the first mascara that doesn't bother my eyes and that I can get gunkified. I've been an absolute die hard Max Factor 2000 Calorie user for years and recently decided to try and branch out - which up until the Isamaya has been pretty meh. I'm a huge fan of an old school spoolie, but this Isamaya wand is hard to beat for the fact of the little bristles at the tip allowing me to fuss in very focused spots. I haven't experienced hard pan on the shadows, however, I've used them in almost the reverse application method that you did and often start with the putty shadow application at the outer corners prior to any other shadow. I do use a foam applicator for some though - as an elder millennial I feel that newer techniques have unfairly scoffed at this old tool, lol. The brow gel is the first one that controls those wily sticky-outy hairs, but doesn't leave my brows feeling that gluey crunch. I do use some other products in conjunction with the brow gel and mascara though. When I don't want to get out the makeup removing face wash, I'll put a coat of VB Beauty tubing mascara underneath so that I can just use warm water to remove (now THAT is some cah-razay technology on the VB mascara - loooove it, just hate hate hate the wand). For brows, I use the Merit stuff to cover my grays and fill in spots, then go in with the Isamaya (the Merit has zero hold for me).

Out of curiosity, did you attempt using the "putty" black shades with your finger, and the shimmer/glitter shadows with an eyeshadow brush? From what I'm gathering, the finger application method is the only way you've attempted to use the shimmer/glitter shades? I would be interested to know if you had taken the inverse approach with the "tools" that you used to apply these different formulas/finishes.

i only have the larger Byredo palettes but can say that Kalahari is my most used palette of the year and the one i keep reaching for above all others! some of the shades have a wonderful grip to the formula for rich color payoff. and the shimmers are impactul yet elegant at the same time. i really really love it, far more than i inititially thought i would from the promo pics! the new lip vinyls that were just launched is by the new director :)

That makeup set looks absolutely ridiculous for the price. All of the shadows look like drugstore quality. The mascara, and its quality, look cheap. And the gloss….it’s just a lightly pigmented black gloss with vanilla scent added. The packaging is plastic?? Ummm nope. This is *WAY* overpriced drugstore makeup. Picture the eyeshadow in a cheap white/clear plastic case, and picture the lip gloss in a plastic Wet n Wild tube….that’s the quality you’re getting, for a ridiculously marked up price. People who creat a makeup line can *make* their products luxury, just by jacking up the price, and consumers fall for it. That line isn’t worth more than 30-40 dollars.

I think she left her good eyeshadow formula at Byredo. Hoping Lucia Pica continues to use it for Byredo - cause I love it. To someone old enough to remember - this new Isamaya brand really felt to me like it was simply recycling late 90s Madonna but with massive amounts of lip filler. The lip filler is my issue with her aesthetic in most of her editorial work too, and even her work for Burberry - which is a brand I adored under the direction of Wendy Rowe and I still really like some of their products. Maybe my cranky late Gen X heart is just too “old” to appreciate the type of cool Isamaya is trying to be 😂😂

I love Lucia Pica work, she has good eye for colors. I loved what Isamaya did with Byredo, but not with Burberry. To me they were truly great when they embraced that chic under the rain aura, with muted color of "rainy" grays, toupe, bourgundy and beige and neige. The last collection with that modern twist were so ugly.

I used my palette for the second time today and I think you've put just articulated my own confused thoughts. I feel like I have the most expensive palette of toppers with a couple of difficult to use cream mattes and the toppers are nothing to shout about. I got a decent look today but I just wasn't happy and despite using my fingers and applying lots of product, that red/neon bronze was still patchy in places. That green you used - I have hard pan in too, from one use, and using it was disappointing given how pretty it looks in the pan. I may try the palette wet but I already think it's a £95 declutter since I've gotten a look out of a nearly 5 year old Colourpop palette I enjoyed more this week. :/ Maybe it's just personal taste or I have no idea what I'm doing!

It’s absolutely insane the level of justification and explanation people have to do in the makeup world. Like it’s crazy that you tried it on for a month and you’re still having to think of reasons why it didn’t work for you and how you can potentially improve your “technique”. I’m reminded now of when beauty youtube was popular and people were jumping thru hoops in order to use an item. It’s crazy. It’s a bad product. I’m already spending mad money on it, why should I have to also then fight with the product in order to use it?

This review is incredibly helpful. I have the palette, and struggle to use it well. I am among those who commented to Hannah that it made me think of her. However my experience with using it was a struggle and I assumed it was my own lack of skill that was the issue - that the palette was too advanced or too editorial for me, and I was anticipating HLP’s review in order to learn what I was doing wrong and what to do to use it well. Low and behold it’s not me, it’s the palette. Now that I have more realistic expectations and understanding of it, I can approach it better for another try. So much appreciation for these “insanely thorough” reviews, Hannah! So valuable.

I agree that this palette is hard-panned. Like most eyeshadow palettes, different textures work differently with different tools. Just because a palette doesn't swatch well, doesn't mean it wont perform well with a brush. Our fingers (inevitably) have oil on them which will obviously cause the eyeshadow formula to work differently. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. Brushes are specifically designed to work with certain formulas and textures and tend to work much better even with eyeshadows that are hard-panned and that don't perform the best with our fingers. I had the same initial thoughts regarding this palette until I used brushes. It really is an amazing and unique quality! Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy this product. Maybe the next one will be better for you. :)

I’m so sad you didn’t love this palette! I have it and mine performs beautifully so far. I have had a little bit of hard pan but I get a good payoff on the eyes. Admittedly I do often foil my shadows and use a sticky base, so that might be why I’m getting a more impactful finish. Great review though, as always. I love hearing your thoughts even if they differ from mine! 🖤

I think that I'll pick up the gloss😍. I've been looking for one like it, since Bite went kaput. I loved their Black Coffee gloss, & I think the shade was identical to the ISAMAYA, except that it didn't have any shimmer particles. The only thing I disliked about that gloss, was the flavor...It was SUPPOSED to be coffee flavored, but to me, it tasted like a cross between Play Doh & what an A.I. simulation would think coffee tastes like.

Since you’ve already purchased these maybe you can try a few things if you haven’t. These eyeshadows probably need to be used with a good flat brush then blended. And the creamy black is meant more for a base so apply it first. For the brow product, brush a little through and let it dry a little before spiking the brows. I find that works best for most brow gels like that including nyx brow glue. I will say the elf black gloss from the cookie collection is amazing. I also would like to see this palette compared to the midnight sun palette. I wish PM would do midnight sun 2 with this type of color story.
