That looks like a clean, ready to use, chuck as the jaws move easily. My ones didn't. The Chinese chucks I got needed to be taken apart and cleaned. They ran like a gearbox filled with sand instead of oil. You measured the maximum grip for the chuck but is that width useful? I would say, mostly not. Maybe for very soft grips, low tension on the chuck key as there are not many jaw teeth engaged in the scroll. You likely know the recommendations. Rust..... Not on any important surfaces I hope. Why not a 4 jaw independent that gives even more options for clamping work pieces?

Stefan, thanks for viewing and commenting, I have a 4 jaw independent, the self centering would be a quick change out of square (or round) parts and be aligned, the independent would need to be indicated

@@outsidescrewball Self centering 4 jaw, or 6 jaw, calls for good objects. Else the grip will unsafe, but You know all that..... Centering on a 4 jaw independent goes quite fast I feel even being a newbie in this game.

Thanks for the video. This chuck shows a well cut gear on the scroll. The Sanou is real crappy compared to this chuck, but only 2 pinions compared to the Sanou with 3.

It's amazing every single one of these chucks I have seen reviewed have had some for of grinding dust in the scroll. Good thing you checked. Looking forward to your mounting solution.

Interesting review. But there are just too many shortcomings for it to be considered for me. The jaws aren't independent at all. There doesn't seem to be any way to "dial in" anything. Especially if it's not perfectly square. So if all you're doing it holding square things, a vice would work equally well. The chuck we have on the LeBlonde out at the Midwest Railway round house is a 4 jaw scroll chuck, but each jaw has it's own pinion so you can dial in the part. I don't like this chuck at all.

thanks for viewing and I respect your comments, like all tools they have their time and place for use, a self center 4 jaw works perfect on round and "square" stock quickly, a 4 jaw "scroll" chuck you cannot switch from square to round "quickly"..hence my comment "time and place" depending on the work in the shop and precision required

@@outsidescrewball I just see this one as being very limited. I tagged you in a community post on my channel of a picture of an independent, 4-jaw scroll chuck. Can be both independent and self centering.

This is a basic chuck - you need to grind the jaws to make it even usable. It does the role of a 3-jaw standard chuck for square stock. I.e. it has precision of a 3-jaw for round stuff but applied to square stuff. Its not a "set true 3 jaw" equivalent - I am sure these are out there as well - a 4-jaw set true self centering (or whatever your favorite brand equivalent is) would be what you describe. Even Chinese could not make one that "sort of works" for just $100.

I do a bit better review of this by adding what it is good for and how do you actually make it into a somewhat useful tool - i.e. how do you grind this chuck.

You spied the same thing on Keith's video that I did. First I've ever seen four jaws self-centering. Obviously three and six jaw, but never a four jaw. That could come in very handy if it does a decent job of centering rounds, squares and octagons.

I’d be careful about those dimensions. You’re not supposed to hang the jaws beyond the inside wind of the scroll. Basically, lathe chucks are rated for full engagement of the scroll. Pretty much max holding for the inside jaws are a bit less than the diameter of the body. For the outside jaws, the usual ones used, they also shouldn’t be extended beyond the body. That is, the outside of the jaws. Somehow, people seem to think that if you have even one wind of the scroll engaged, it’s ok, but it’s definitely not. These inexpensive chucks are even less reliable, so using them properly is a must. Yes, mostly people get away with it, but it’s skirting a dangerous place.

Thanks Chuck. No worse than any contemporary value chuck I've seen lately, well perhaps the surface rust was a notch worse but meaningless on non-contact surfaces and best practice is to immediately clean any import chuck, just part of the deal, you don't pay them to clean it it is a do it your self step in the process and it is a given you need to do it just for piece of mind if nothing else. If I had a need for it I'd buy that chuck it was far cleaner than the last three chucks I have bought from abroad. I'd rather see the surface rust than all the swarf I've cleaned out of my chucks. It seems to me that they are actually doing a much better job than they did 10 or 20 years ago when I got my swarf bucket chucks. Happy Holidays.

I'm not too fuzzy about the self centering 4jaws.. I can understand if you already have a regular 4jaw. In order of purchase>>> 3jaw, standard 4jaw, ER40 collet chuck, and last 4jaw self centering. Vevor stuff has been fine for what I need. Price is hard to beat for us home gamers.

depending on what you are holding, yes it will hold round just like a 3 jaw (which won't hold square)...but if you have many square items, then this chuck makes quick work since it is self centering a typical 4 jaw is independent jaws which must be adjusted/indicated in....thanks for viewing and your question

@@AmateurRedneckWorkshop Actually it has worse grip :) You cannot grip as well with 4 jaw self centering as with 3 jaw self centering a round part - with 4 points of contact always 1 will be loose. This is why surface plate is on 3 pins not 4 and this is why a table in your kitchen rocks a little.
