needing to reflow the chips on gameboy games is an extremely common fault, because the pcb is held so close to the back of the shell everytime the game is put into the system and removed again the board gets flexed slightly, in time the joints just fracture and you get weird glitches. I think it happens much more often with Pokemon because those are the games people most often come back to play (Zelda and Super Mario Land 2 being the follow ups)

I had this happen to me as a kid with my Links Awakening DX. Stupid 10 year old me threw it away thinking the cartridge was perma damaged. If only I knew about this now and held onto the cart :(. I since bought 2 other copies of links awakening for my collection but I won't part with those because it's probably my favorite zelda game.

i reflowed both even took it out and used wick on the solder and applied new solder to the pads and reapplied the rom chip and now i get nothing just a messed up nintendo logo on launch any suggestions?

Pins not making contact to the rom chip. Reflow the chip again make sure nothing is bridged and check to see if every pin leads up to the rom chip or the ram chip.

Hello, I have a leaf green copy that is not working that says m1 chip not installed. It is an authentic copy. I want to try to do what you did to the second game. What is the liquid you used? And do you just touch the soldering iron to it and that's it?

M1 chip not installed I think that’s a problem on the flash memory chip. It may need to be resoldered or in worse case replaced.

@PunkNDisorderlyGamer the game turns on and plays fine it just won't save. When I opened it up and cleaned with IPA it still wouldn't work. On the back of the board there is a half circle with "MB" on it. There is a tiny brown spot on the letter B that won't come off. Could this be it?

@@PunkNDisorderlyGamer I'm in the same situation, I reflow my copy of yellow but doesn't load. I've a question though: is it possible to fry a chip during the reflow process? My soldering iron has no temperature control, and I'm afraid I kept on going over the pins to reflow too much and gave a lot of heat to the chip...

I noticed there was some sharpy on the cart there. I am not sure if it works on cart plastic but it works on game stickers: Use hand sanitizer to remove sharpie marker ink. It removes almost something like 95% of the ink on a game sticker, sometimes even 100%. Learned that one at my old job, we use to write on tape all the time and we used purel to correct ourselves. It helped me remove the ink of a Mike Tyson Punch Out cart that I got.

Ebay try to look for the bulk broken lots, sometimes you get a mixture of consoles and carts and other various video game related things. The program I use is iMovie, I have a Mac mini that gets the job done. You seem to be asking these questions perhaps maybe we will get to see a video or 2 from you?

Robert Lewis you should be ok you could list your content as “not for children” like I do and from what I understand, it doesn’t allow any children accounts to view my content. Although most of my stuff is fine for all audiences I just comply to avoid any frivolous strikes.

I've replaced a battery on a Emerald once, but I was younger and didnt have time to solder, so it's sitting in there with some electrical tape around a replacement battery. XD You tempt me to go back and go do it properly. You think you'll be working on some GBA games soon? Or are those ones harder to diagnose due to size or some such? I notice the closer we get to current tech, the harder it is to repair.
@PunkNDisorderlyGamer
4 жыл бұрын
Yes you should definitely go back and replace that battery properly it’s pretty simple. I do have some GBA games recorded and ready for editing stay tuned for those. Yes that’s why I don’t really touch modern stuff too many error codes, causes for failure, moving parts, small components you can barely see, and since it’s more modern it’s more expensive to acquire and you risk losing too much if you can’t fix it.
