I’m a field tech for Fresno equipment in five points ca. And that a is a common failure down here. The turbo is moving to far, it shouldn’t move more the 90 degrees from its resting position. I replace a turbo about once a week. I carry a actuator with me. And when I see that code I try the actuator and if it doesn’t calibrate I just replace the turbo. There is a new payload for those engines but it wouldn’t fix that problem. I enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work.

In Europe that issue was traced to the manifold. It was allowing the turbo to move and vibrate too much and destroying the actuator and ring gear JD did a recall or PIP on them and replaced all the manifolds and turbos on 170 190 and 210 with beefed up parts

Hey Warren, thank you very much for your videos and work. You're the best out there. I've had VGT's (of different makes as well) fail the calibration due to OVER travel. The cumulative wear in the linkage to the unison ring causes the actuator to travel beyond its normal range. I can rarely see or feel the wear, but its there. Turbo replacement it is!

Another great video Warren. Just thinking about it, when it is giving that error code, instead of a travel issue could it be a resistance issue. As in it is not moving as freely as it should be?. Moving yes but not freely. I know some things that can be an issue am wondering if could be for this as well. How the system determine's that is unknown maybe it is related to draw current or even time to go from full up to full down. I am sure there is someone here who is much more knowledgeable than myself who would know if that is possible.

There's a lot more going on via the can bus, feedback travel and load current, maybe the travel is ok but the effort to move may exceed the tolerances thus causing your error. This is a problem with error codes they are very generic and criptic. Swapology is the only cure here. Great video, agree with other commentator a magnetic stand for your camera or even a head cam😉

ECU will also set codes if there's to much travel. Sometimes heat can change the length of linkages and go outside the ECU's set value. Sometimes wear can do it.

Hello Warren. What were the symptoms (besides codes) that prompted this work. I'm asking because I have an International 4300 with the DT466 that has a very similar VGT. It runs fine when cold but gets less responsive as it heats up. After a hot restart all hell breaks loose. Sometimes zero throttle response until I feather the throttle, then it kicks in but blows soot. Then it runs only OK and then sputters again. This condition persists the rest of the day. Your videos are AMAZING. Thank you!!!
@gregstanley9398

Nice job warren those VGT’s can be a pain . I have found that some times the travel is too great on the actuator it should move 90 degrees. You can reduce the travel by welding a stop to the clamping band and get the lower end of the linkage rod to stop on it and then run the VGT Calibration all should be good 🙂

Great video young man and with modern stuff going wrong it makes you wonder if all these modern very expensive tractors are actually worth it their cost value in the long run? Because you could buy a properly restored old tech (80's tractor for example) tractor for maybe 1/3 the price of a new one and it would outlast the new one. Many old pre 2000's tractors are still going strong in their original markets or sold into export markets as sued machines. I cannot see modern (The last decade or so) tractors lasting 20,30 or 40+yrs and then going to Africa or Asia for a second life. And on that basis you have to question the economics and "Eco/green" value of remaking new stuff. Still, if they didn't go wrong Warren would loose work and we would loose the videos!

It'd still be nice to know what causes the computer to throw a code. I'm guessing it'd have something to do with either the travel distance out of range or time to travel stop to stop with a given voltage, too fast too slow. I'll bet you could tell if they'd give you a look at that data in the diagnostic program. It must be really sensitive since you pulled a working one, reinstalled it and then a no go. Did you have to address Deere link not outputting code to the office? With the information you had you only recourse was to get a new unit. I can't see it could be anything but wear in the VGT parts because you cleaned it up nicely. Whats the odds you'll be revisiting the other tractor soon?

So did everything you did including putting a new turbo on and ecu fallowing all the diagnostics couldn’t figure anything out. Ended up putting in a dtac case and they had me running external wires straight to the ecu from all the turbo connectors. Nothing fixed it and never figured out any problems. Finally deere wanted me to run wires from the air intake sensor and while disassembling the air intake sensor connector i found worn wires on the connector that was the whole problem. But no codes what so ever about air intake sensor. So keep your eye open for that. It was a short harness that was a John Deere PIP. If i could post pictures I would post one.
