Digging around his box of random VHS tapes yielded this unexpected find. The tape was stored in an outside shed and has some damage to it, but thankfully the tape was 98% intact.
By my estimate, the recording starts at around 10:56 AM. The main focus is CNN, but CNBC also gets briefly covered about 2/3 the way in.
There are hundreds of other similar uploads on KZitem, and one might wonder why this upload was necessary. The answer to that lies in how this single day in 2001 affected millions of Americans and many others around the world - my Grandpa was no exception. As much as I would love to ask him what exactly was going through his mind when this all unfolded, I sadly can not.
Thousands of other individuals likely have similar quickly-compiled VHS tapes they recorded during the attacks - but how many of them see the light of day? How many of them even get dug back up out of the closet, basement, or attic? How many families know they even have such a relic? The only known footage of the immediate aftermath of United Airlines Flight 93's crash surfaced 10 years after the fact. Who knows what all we have yet to see?
It's necessary because it's a relic of the frame of mind of millions that day. A decision to preserve that shocking moment in time to show to generations yet to come. A decision to record.
