This explanation was very helpful. My application is a classic automobile (1962 corvette) that has a DC generator and vibrating contact regulator. Armed with this knowledge and my test equipment I'll be able to troubleshoot and determine why it's not charging properly. Thank you so much. My only constructive criticism would be to include the voltage cut out circuit (it's very simple).

Yes, Tirril VR can also be known as Vibrating contact type Regulator. To be specific: In Tirril Voltage Regulator, a fixed resistance is cut in and cut out of the exciter field circuit of the alternator.This is achieved by rapidly opening and closing a shunt circuit across the exciter rheostat. For this reason, it is also known as vibrating type voltage regulator.
