In this video you strongly suggest it’s just the weight that creates any benefit and that you are skeptical of the laminates. But not two years ago you wrote a blog post implying you understood why it works. See below. So which is it? I did finally give in because of Harry Weisfeld-the guy is so genuine how could I not? Fortunately, it worked and my reward was finally learning its structure and why it worked.

The VPI Magic Brick was very popular years ago. I have two of them sitting on top of my audio research amplifier. One over the power transformer and one in the middle of the output transformers. I'm not sure I ever heard any difference with this particular amp but it did work with another amp that I had prior which was also audio research.

I use a different vibration and resonance dampers...including the Entreq vibbeaters They can be used to minimize/remove unwanted energy generated by your device...such as transformer vibrations or speaker resonances etc. They are not a universal solution to all vibration/resonance related problems...but when they work, they work very well. In most cases the differences are subtle, depending on your systems ability to resolve small changes. However, sometimes the difference can be transformative...for better or for worse. Just my 2c.

Yes. I "discovered" this when my audio rig was at a much less 'audiophile' state than it is now. If I remember correctly it was an NAD monitor series 1000 on some 4el84 home brew tube amp, a Denon SL-7D record player with Grado Green and a teac phono preamp and a modified (clock, muting) Yamaha CDX880 cd player. Speakers were either IMF Super Compact or Tannoy Eaton. So, nothing too exciting. We put some other device, I think it was little Manley tube amps, on top of my cd player in a testing setup. When removed, I noticed that the CD player started sounding more 'brittle'. The amps weren't mind, so when they went I did what you did and got two bricks from the garden. Same difference. I eventually opted out of it because I don't care about CD anyway and it looked horrible, but it was a fun experiment :D.

I use black sorbothane under the feet of amplifiers and bottom of speakers to absorb resonance. A 6" x 6" x 1/8" sheet costs about $20. That makes 36 pieces that are 1" square. The material is sticky on both sides so it keeps gear from sliding around. You can use two pieces to make it 1/4" thick for heavier items.

I have a set of Cerwin Vega SL12s. They were too boomy sounding. What I did was 1. I bought a rubber floor mat and cut it down to 14X14 Inch and set one on top of each speaker. The speakers are 14x14 inch. 2. Then I used 4 brick 12x12 pavers and placed two on top of the rubber on each speaker and centered them. It made one heck of a difference and cut down the boomy sound and just brought the high, mid and lows more into line. I know a lot of people do not like Cerwin Vega speakers but they can sound really good by experimenting. Total coast of doing this was around $20

Anything you do that lessens your boxes from vibrating will improve the focus of your sonic image. How much you should spend depends on what you are willing to look at, and can afford. I read a comment by one person where she stated: "Unless you are getting mechanical case vibrations... don't waste your money" All of our equipment gets mechanical case vibrations. There is no "Unless". You can place bricks on your cases, as a test. If you hear an improvement, then you (or your wife) decide whether or not to keep the bricks, or replace the bricks with something that is less of an eyesore. But at least you will know whether or not a weight on your cases is beneficial. I have not researched weights. But there are probably loads of heavy things you can place on your boxes. Be careful to not block the air vents.

@@ptg01 The BlueSound is definitely good to live with. It was hard to get onboard with anything else that I was using just using a digital out with to the D-10X's DAC. DACs do a lot of the work, but when the opportunity came to get an Aurender, I just had to try it. I got a great price on it and was able to easily sell it if it wasn't gonna make much of a difference. It totally changed my streaming experience which is 80% of my music. I honestly couldn't believe streaming could be that good. That goes back to my Roku 4k comparison to audio. I often buy CDs too because to me on my D-10x they sound phenomenal. As for the car analogy yes, cars get you to point A&B, but the experience is what motivates one to seek the model or brand they choose. Same for Honda vs Toyota. It will improve the audio if there are microphonic components inside. Tubes are microphonic thus if a tube is used in an amp, you can potentially benefit from dampening it. Of course a turntable is also highly microphonic and rather than putting a brick on top of it, you can use heavy bricks under it.
@ThinkingBetter

@@Douglas_Blake More weight moves any resonance to a lower frequency while requiring more energy for the same peak of vibration. Ages ago I bought some spring loaded turntable platform/plate of wood to reduce this issue but it actually made matter much worse as it created a resonance condition where my floor and speakers could cause continuous acoustic feedback. It wasn’t very heavy and the springs had no dampening. I almost blew up my speakers in that setup when suddenly the entire system got into a positive mechanical feedback between speakers and cartridge. I replaced it with some heavy bricks and it greatly helped.

@@Douglas_Blake Imagine the tuning fork to be a vacuum tube. Compare the amount of sound you can cause in the tuning fork stuck in heavy cement vs stuck on a thin piece of wood by putting the fist in the table underneath. The fork itself has a resonant frequency that doesn’t change but on a system level, the resonant frequency still goes down when the weight goes up and less of the fist energy will get into the tuning fork.
@ThinkingBetter

@@Douglas_Blake From an article by Robert B. Tomer (Excerpt from ‘Getting the Most Out of Vacuum Tubes’ published in 1960 ): “Most mechanical energy is fed to the tube elements by means of the common supporting member, such as the chassis. Standing waves are often present which effectively couple a high percentage of the energy directly to the tube elements. Two methods are very effective in breaking up the standing-wave pattern and hence in reducing the feedback loop. One of these is to add a weighted shield over the tube, thereby changing its vibration period and eliminating the mechanical resonant circuit. Another method is to isolate the socket from the chassis by using rubber grommets.”.
@SeerManMan

@@Douglas_Blake The resonance frequency will indeed change, most understanding of phenomenon is shielded under "models" on how they work when in fact everything is multi variable and not "localized", any sort of electromotive force has mechanical vibrations. the end object a lot of times is rather important such as in the case of leverage being dependent on distance or even your ear which too is an end object. The phenomenon of resonance is actually a dependent variable which depends on the source AND end object's reactance / impedance, you can effectively change the resonance by introducing impedance which will change the overall quality of the sound when it reaches your ear. Take a look at "newton's cradle" for a "mechanical" analog to how this occurs.

I believe the Denon DCD-1520 had a heavy metal plate with rubber isolation to absorb vibration under the top cover. Probably more so for anti-skipping and tracking of the laser, but probably couldn't hurt with damping microphonics, a side benefit perhaps. I do use a 1 inch slab of granite underneath my Denon DP-59L turntable.
