This helped my 10 year old to understand wavelength and pitch. Thank you!

This is a cool aliasing effect of the camera's shutter (which probably scans across the image vertically) with the string waves. That's why the effect looks different for horizontal and vertical strings.

The strings aren’t even that out of tune, the pitch is just a couple of hertz off I swear, all these 11 year old girls in the comments And by the way, this guys not performing a concert, he’s just trying to show how a string vibrates

This does not have anything to do to with the camera being digital. The phenomenon is the same as why car wheels or helicopter paddles seem to rotate slow or backwards on movies and has to do with the frame rate of the camera. You could also compare it to the 'beating' of strings that are _almost_ on the same tune. Let's say the camera takes 30fps and a string vibrates at 240Hz (evenly divisible by 30), through the camera the string would seem virtually frozen since each frame would capture it in the same position. This could be easily demonstrated by tuning a string so that it vibrates on frequency that is a multiple of the frame rate. Here's one video that explains the car wheel movie effect: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tHyYr4Kfp3ikq6A

It is the rolling shutter effect of your phone's camera.
@stickyfox

What you're seeing here is not the undulation of the strings, but an effect called "rolling shutter," which is created inside the digital camera. Very cool, but don't be misled into thinking that's what you would see if you could slow time down. This is the same effect that makes car and bicycle wheels and RC planes and helicopters look so weird in cell phone videos.

Absolutely correct. it's an artefact caused by the electronic rolling shutter thats used in CMOS camera sensors.

Yeah, it doesn't show you the nature behavior of the strings vibrating,, but it's a camera effect called : rolling shutter with high speed shutter open.

whoaa I've never seen this before, you could see the harmonic variations, I can't believe it's never shown anywhere. All you have to do is have a variable speed camera, if you let it shoot at 16fps you can the vibrations, but you need to match the fps to the harmonic of the frequency of the string. Right away you see that the wave produced by the violin is almost a square wave, hence the very high pitch.
@nervren4030

Pablo2thetop And thats why you will never see patterns like this in any slow motion video of a vibrating string. If the strings were going that crazzy our eyes could detect it.

I've always found that triangular waves tend to sound like the violin, and triangular waves still give you the high-order harmonics. I was fascinated by just how sharp those triangles are in the video.

Paul Kemp Yea I know, it's almost like cg animiation, it's so perfect. This was kind of an eye opener. Square waves were a little mysterious to me, I now understnad that they're produced when the wave is limited physically, it's amplitude has a threshold, which depends on how taught the string is. So it could be produced by simply applying floor() or ceiling() to the part of the trough and any wave can be transoflred into such.

+VanillaSnake21 The shape of the wave form doesn't dictate pitch, the rate of the frequency takes care of that part. A more square wave indicates a more complex wave form, such as the clarinet's almost perfect square wave.
@VanillaSnake21
9 жыл бұрын
Joshua Aldrich it doesn't dictate the pitch but the overall timbre of the sound. The wave is restricted in it's vibration. I don't know if it's more complex it's an incomplete waveform thats all.

The rolling shutter effect has nothing to do with harmonics. You would get the same effect even if you were to film a string vibrating only on the fundamental or a single harmonic. It's more like a modulation, the camera introduces its own signal which is multiplied by the string's signal.
