"Nicola Vicentino (1511 - ca. 1576) proposed reviving the chromatic and enharmonic genera of Greek music in his treatise, 'L'antica musica ridotta alla moderna prattica' (Ancient Music Adapted to Modern Practice, 1555). Many of his contemporaries scoffed at his ideas and his music. Yet a number of his madrigals reach a high level of artistry, among them 'L'aura che 'l verde lauro', on a Petrarch sonnet (published 1572). At one point, he incorporated the Greek chromatic tetrachord, descending a minor third (F, E, Eflat, D) as a motive for imitation on the word 'soavemente' (gently). Here, direct chromatic motion is not a sign of grief but an evocation of classical antiquity and thus of an idyllic pastoral scene. In the madrigals of Vicentino, chromaticism was a special effect, startling (and therefore effective) because of its unfamiliarity. But by the end of the century, as other composers adopted it with a wider range of meanings, chromaticism gradually became part of the common musical language." A History of Western Music, J. Peter Burkholder, Donald Jay Grout, Claude V. Palisca, Norton & Company, Tenth Edition, PP. 215-16.

I am not sure if the notation isn't reduced to chromatic writing, although Vicentino had some of this enharmonic writings in his print. But excellent performance.

I'm quite surprised to learn that something so chromatic existed this early. Excellent work and performance.

Riveting harmonies and generally rather well sung (if eccentrically interpreted here and there) but surprising to hear an actual mistake in the Quintus part at the end of measure 156. Live recording?

Did you make the score? I was transcribing this from microfilm and the pages containing this piece in the quinto partbook are missing. I'm not sure if they're just missing in microfilm, or if the copy at Modena is imperfect. Do youi know if the Q part of what you posted is the true part or if it's reconstructed?
