I had this type of gramophone, Indian HMV made. I started using it when I was just 3 and half years old. Now even if I see latest models I can find out, guess and know the functions without referring to a guide book.

Do you have any 'screw on' devices that hold the platter down in moving? I have both VV-50 models, Do you have an extra spindle top for sale?

I just bought one like the one on the right,it plays very loud and nice.My question is the reproducer can twist down maybe 10 degrees making the needle closer to pointing straight down.Is this to play diamond disc records?

Nice machines, I have a collection of these that now number 11 including all three variations, both mahogany, and oak. Very easy motors to work with, takes me less than an hour to strip one down, clean it, repack the spring, and have it spinning again. These are a little pricy on eBay just now, everyone seems to want $300 and up for the nicer , and sometimes rough 50's. My fault I think, I bought a bunch of them before the winter so I would have something to tinker with during the dark months. All of a sudden the prices shot from $125 or less to what we have now. Some of the earlier machines were issued with the exhibition reproducer, possibly all of them I think, the No2 was an upgrade. So far only one of my early machines had the No2 on it when I got it. The smaller VV-35 had the No2 from the start, but it's a later 1923-24 produced machine. The 50 is probably the most popular of the portables, appreciation for portables is slowly increasing as prices for horn machines increase past what most new collectors will pay. I still see an attitude against portables on some of the message boards, not as overt as it was but still there if only in the lack of interest some senior members show on the subject. Being an antique car owner, Model A Ford, Model T Ford, I look for the machines that would have been carried in these cars. I have lately been accumulating a small HMV portable collection, Model 100-101-102, Electrola 106, and even colonial models including the 112 , the closest HMV in style to the VV-50 . Cirola, Phonola, Carryola, Pillard, Thorens, Columbia, Outing, Pal, just to name a few of the portables that have found their way to me. The VV50 was my first antique phonograph more than 25 years ago, I learned how to service these machines by working with that first one. Now I service the motors, and reproducers myself but I do not refinish cases unless they are totally gone, I prefer my antiques to look the part, proper patina. I have larger machines, floor models, even horn machines, but the VV-50 will always be my favorite to play with, for playing records however no portable, and very few larger machines beat the sound reproduction quality of the HMV 102. Keep up the informational videos, most phonograph/Gramophone videos on here tend to just be a machine playing. That's all fine and good but I want to know about the machine also. I have seen several early first type VV-50's on eBay over the last month of two, the ones that sold went for twice what I paid for better machines just six months ago. Sooner or later one will come along at reasonable cost and you will have the set. Easy to spot, just look for one were the aluminum horn protrudes above the motorboard and it's full all around, no wood involved in the horn itself.

Just found one of these in my parents storage along with a bunch of records. I have the 1924 production model. Think I'd need to clean it up and oil it. Any idea of the value for an average working and non working unit?

@Daniel Arick Not according to Look for the Dog, among others. The 35 had a lower model number, but the 50 was out first.
